Also tempted, also hesitant. Already own 5 SB plugs, but still somewhat disappointed by their lack of communication regarding updates, changelogs, etc.

Yea they are fairly quiet as far as devs go, I do remember them being quite active in this thread early on though.

I think I'm going to take the plunge, I just had a play around with the demo again and remembered why I liked it in the first place - the design really encourages more experimental patch design than most other synths I've used and I end up liking a lot of the results. Seems worth the price just for generating interesting FX/one shots/ambience layers etc., which it can do very quickly.

Does anyone know/remember whether you can load custom wavetables? Drag and drop functionality for the Transformer oscillator type seems to be working well which is awesome.

Me too but this one is pretty unique both in terms of design and how many possibilities it has in such a clever interface.

Randomizer only worked for loading a random preset, but of course you do get the dice on the mod matrix which brings modulation randomization/movement in a very intuitive and fun way.

I just sold my license here on KVR shortly before this sale. I would pick it up again, for the vibe it gets me and then find myself always skipping over it when making music, which is a shame.

As mentioned, SB is kinda weird in terms of working on a product and improving it. I was asking them via mail if they would be any CPU improvements or features added in the future. I did get a response, but it seems this won't be the case. Not that I think CPU is in realm of *insane*, I just think it could be better for what the synth does. Factory was also one of the slowest plug-ins I owned, when it comes to time for the UI to pop up. Still very fun to play with!

I have several SB plug ins and demoed Factory. The GUI is great but the sound is a big disappointment - flat, steril sound. The midrange seems to be very prominent, low end is missing and there is always a trace of some distortion audible, which probably adds to the stiff sounding midrange. The base sound quality is not ok IMO. I listen with my ADAM S3A and the difference to other VSTi I have is striking. Factory would be a welcomed addition but the sound holds me back.

'Transformer (oscillator selection/mode)

A granular oscillator.

Here, you can import a sample of your choice. The sample will be automatically analysed and transformed into a wavetable which is then played back in segments as a looped waveform. By applying this process, it is possible to play the sample across a theoretically unlimited note range. Feel free to try out any kind of sound material for more Metal Machine Music. Even unusual sounds, e.g. vocal samples of you singing under the shower, may yield interesting results. Or not.'

(When the oscillator selection is: Transform, you have the following controls; as well as a tiny graphic of the waveform)

'Position: Shifts the section of the sample that will be looped and played back.

Formant: Shifts the formants of the sample and thus alters its fundamental timbre.'


'To load an audiofile, click on the small waveform display. Your computers file browser will open up. Select an audiofile of your choice anywhere on your
hard disk and load it into Factory‘s oscillator by another click. Factory will accept the audio file formats wav, aif, and mp3.'

I just love to use Factory with Zynaptiq Adaptiverb and Wormhole.
Factory is a large download, though, much larger than Obscurium for example. That's why I guess it won't be ported to iOS.

I dunno - these days: some of the downloads in iOS-land are pretty large, Fleer!

- And SB's ports are pretty direct; as opposed to say: Virsyn - who has done several iOS reinventions/interpretations of their desktop ip, in addition to a few iOS-exclusive apps (ex: Addictive Pro)

I would love to see a full-featured port of Factory to iOS (SB certainly could) - that would be a fantastic addition to an already wonderful bunch of synths that play in iOS world -
