Low cost/free rompler to Reaper

Hi all,
I am just about to switch to Reaper as my main host. I really dig the awesome tutorials on the Reaper web site and this DAW seems to have improved greatly in workflow over the last few years.
The FX seems great and I'm thinking of adding fre or low-cost FX from two not so known (by me anyway) developers: Hornet and Klangheim. I also own a copy of Synthmaster.
However, I am in need of a rompler/similar for typical GM sounds (acoustic etc), as Reaper doesn't supply this. I grew up with a Proteus 1 and its soundbank of 16 MB. Thus, I'm not a huge fan of the idea of multi-GB sample libraries, free or not. I have previously used the (free) E-MU Proteus VX which was quite a gem, but I'm not sure it will work under Win 10 and this setup.
All ideas are welcome!
Thanks,
SparkySpark

By the way, I have been suggested looking into Kontakt, as there is a nice freeware bundle for the Kontakt Player. I now noticed Bitley, which develops really inexpensive Fairlight sound banks (ten dollars per bank) for Kontakt: http://bitley.laconicsounds.net/lost-in ... ight-maze/
Gotta check 'em out!

Most likely, you need full version of Kontakt to fully enjoy these. Kontakt Player will only play specially encoded content (it will say Kontakt Player compatible with a big tag, as it costs a lot to license), other Kontakt patches will play for 15 minutes, then it will go to demo mode. Still factory content for Kontakt Player is worth a grab.SparkySpark wrote:I now noticed Bitley, which develops really inexpensive Fairlight sound banks (ten dollars per bank) for Kontakt
Here's another rompler worth downloading: http://www.magix-audio.com/in/independe ... -software/

I don't think you can generally say that "it costs a lot" to license Kontakt Player. It seems to vastly differ from product to product. But, if, say, Moog wanted to release a Polymoog library for Kontakt Player, they'd surely have to pay a lot.

I'd stay away from Kontakt if you're not looking for multi GB libraries. It's the definition of that.
You can get a free soundfont player like sfz or Jeskola XS-1 and a soundfont like GeneralUser GM. Here's a track made entirely with those sounds, which total somewhere around just 30mb: https://soundcloud.com/nine-of-kings/ge ... etrofuture

I'm anything but a specialist, but, they way i always understood it, the "magic" of a realistically sounding sampled instrument is in multisamples, to get all the nuances around the octaves, and "velocity" of the real instrument right. Hence a good sounding instrument will be big. Just my 2c, based on what i read.

you can get a GM SampleTank 2.x library for cheap on esoundz, and use the free SampleTank player (2 or 3 depending on 32 or 64 bit) to import/use it.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

AIR Xpand is worth a look,
it's been real cheap recently

Hi, thanks. Well actually that isn't necessarily what I am looking for. A rompler / sons module has a lot of sounds that work well together, and these sounds are instantly read into memory not to hinder the creative flow.chk071 wrote:I'm anything but a specialist, but, they way i always understood it, the "magic" of a realistically sounding sampled instrument is in multisamples, to get all the nuances around the octaves, and "velocity" of the real instrument right. I honestly do not care about very very faithful bass sounds for example, I just want a GM module, but better (think JV- 1080).
My music de preferance is Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, and Kraftwerk. ...and I also do pop music a la Madonna or Pet Shop Boys.

Thanks for the heads up! I thought that was only Sample Tank. I downloaded the freeware version of ST but erased it as it, well, was not a rompler:)nineofkings wrote:I'd stay away from Kontakt if you're not looking for multi GB libraries. It's the definition...
