I've Been Using A Mouse To Insert Notes And Automation. How Would A MIDI Keyboard Benefit Me Other Than Making Playing Chords Easier

Post

You can actually play virtual instruments. :P But, seriously, get a keyboard. It is not only worth it, it will be the best investment you can do, when you don't happen to own one.

A keyboard makes trying out melodies, chords etc before recording them much quicker and easier. And recording things direct gives you a bit more of a human feel. Though in my case a bit too human so I still need the quantize facilities in the DAW and a bit of mouse work.

You can play in real time is the biggest benifit, makes experimenting so much faster, as well as improvising or just going with where your moods and thoughts take you. Even if you only end up noodling, going from a mouse input to a midi keyboard will be a game changer for most people. Do it and never look back.

What DAW are you using? if you are using Ableton Live and you don't know to play keys then a Push might be a better options, Push version 1 goes cheap in the second hand market.

FL Studio And Sonar. Can I Play Live With FL?

i've been point and click for a decade, but keyboards for decades before.

eg. ragtime piano is easier to do on a keyboard, you know, octaving between two notes rapidly. for the jazz i do mostly, i miss the clavia stick, but my "workspace" is much more couchworthy without a bloody keyboard in the way.

used to have one of those edirol slim bed deals until i actually travelled with it, somewhere between the airport and library detectors, all the keys except one died. what the f**k, edirol.

but the reason i am writing in this thread is,

wake me up when a sub $1k, sub $500, sub $200 keyboard for usb or midi has keys on it that don't sound like a starter pistol in a stairwell when you release the f**king key.

mountains of shit you turn out, any consideration for anything crudely serviceable?

seriously i doubt there's anythnig under $2000 that solves the problem of "padding the back of the key so it doesn't clack when you release it without having to redesign the whole f**king keybed you just paid for"

you assholes, you assholes, you assholes, you assholes, you assholes

you stupid pieces of shit

Back in XX century, all the musicans could actually plan an instrument

Seriosly clicking loops in FL does not compare to hands-on control and ability to play live. Once you try, it will completely blow your mind.

The obvious solution is to use closed-back headphones and TURN UP THE VOLUME so you cannot hear the keybed clicks anymore.

nah. it's filling the resonant cavity in the key with *something* like foam insulate or balsa and prepping a bunch of little felt or rubber pads for the back of the key. all of which ought to be a sensible part of the design process for acoustic equipment. and then stalking keyboard manufacturers one by one until that scum is wiped form the surface of this blessed and once gracious earth before people tried to perpetrate that bullshit as an actual product.

it's like making a trumpet with a solid bore because you're ignorant and despise the entire universe and any concept of reason.

worthless pieces of shit.

Just Got Myself A NanoKey.. I've Been Less Productive Than With Just A Mouse Because Of The Amount Of Time Playing Around Without Getting Anything Done With Having A Keyboard Permits. I'm Not A Keyboard Player, By The Way.

It might be an idea to take some lessons in either paino playing (for the techniques on how to press the keys and how to string notes together) or get yourself into some music theory. Playing the keyboard will come alot easier then and eventually will help with speeding up your process.

I Just Don't Know How To Improvise Beyond Playing Chords In Whole Notes Haha

Start by making a loop with whole note chords. Now pick a different instrument and jam along with your loop on the nanokeys. You'll play a lot of "wrong" notes for a while, but pretty soon you'll start to get the hang of it.
