Oh so not Fairlight as in the classic synth?
This 'Fairlight' seems to be some sort of DSP card?

No, not the synth - the Fairlight BM bought in 2016 was based in Australia and (I quote) "creates the world’s most powerful digital audio software and hardware for video production”
Looks like there's a DSP card and a console available to enhance the experience but neither are required to use the DAW functionality in Resolve 14.
It's not going to be upending the DAW market just yet since there's a lot of stuff missing that'd you'd find in most modern DAWs but Blackmagic are incredibly aggressive in updating their software so it's definitely one to watch - especially since it's free.
I do all my editing and color-grading in Resolve so this is fantastic news for me

This is pretty cool! I could see dragging things from your DAW of choice etc. into there, and using it to mix dialog etc. in. It doesn't look like it supports Instruments, so there's that, but for not having to worry about editing your audio to film in a DAW first etc. it makes a lot of sense.
No illusions about being able to use Mackie control surfaces or devices that support that though, since they make their own line...
What do you all think of the free version of resolve VS Premire and FCPX?

Sexy, affordable too.
Bezier curves for editing parameters we wish DAWs had

The free version is as good as either once you get used to it, the speed ups they mention in this update are as much a big story as the Fairlight tech being integrated, but the big story is non of these, it is the fact that Studio now costs $299 and no dongle, a lot of facilities will be switching to this for sure.machinesworking wrote:This is pretty cool! How is it for working on a Windows machine? It comes out of the mac world and I dont think it handles MTS or AVCHD files natively

It would be nice if you could export audio in sample rates other than 48KHz. I had a quick look at it last night on my laptop but didn't get too far with it (mainly due to the low resolution of my laptop display and lack of any audio material to mess with).

Although I love what Blackmagic are doing for the world their free software is a buggy and has a lot of annoying crashes. Wouldn't want to use Resolve as my Daw lol way to unstable.

They are definitely being aggressive in keeping a competitive edge. Studio now at $299... plus the free version is much more powerful than what they used to offer for free.
I'll have to check this out later, although I don't need this.

Had the free DaVinci Resolve on my machine since I think v9 .... Still have absolutely no idea how to use it and just blindly update it whenever they have a new version
This latest version complained I'd ran out of RAM on my GPU with a blank project open, not sure my laptop will be up for the challenge !

Does this mean they have metronome, tempo map and musical timeline? i.e. I want a grid of beats and bars. Is this finally possible now?
WAIT WHAT! The studio is now only $299? JESUS.

No, they make a separate point about the new audio features not being designed for musical uses but rather for video/film sound use.keyman_sam wrote:Does this mean they have metronome, tempo map and musical timeline? i.e. I want a grid of beats and bars. Is this finally possible now?

If you are finding it crashing a lot then your system isn't up to spec, this is not generalised software like others, Blackmagic is very very specific about usable hardware for an extremely reliable setup, this is used a lot in a ot of high end facilities that depend on stability.shroom81 wrote:Although I love what Blackmagic are doing for the world their free software is a buggy and has a lot of annoying crashes. Nope, this come from Linux not Mac, it was ported to Windows and then Mac, and black magic developers are very goid at cross platform.woggle wrote:bungle wrote:The free version is as good as either once you get used to it, the speed ups they mention in this update are as much a big story as the Fairlight tech being integrated, but the big story is non of these, it is the fact that Studio now costs $299 and no dongle, a lot of facilities will be switching to this for sure.machinesworking wrote:This is pretty cool! Right now most facilities are choosing Windows for this for the maturity of the Nvidia drivers.
MTS and AVCHD are horrific formats, they are delivery not edit formats, transcode them first and watch the massive speed increases you get in any editing software
Video is not like audio, different formats are used for different parts of the pipeline, until recently even proxies where used exstensively, but Transcoding to ProRes or DNxHD is pretty much good enough nowadays for all but the most demanding productions (RAW for Cinema mostly) they are both stunning edit formats, most people dont even bother proxying and they are very very quick in edit suites too.
