setting pitch bend range for Kontakt

I have a specific compositional problem - I want to smoothly raise the pitch of a note from Kontakt (violin, duduk, whatever) by a semitone over a period of time up to a minute. Add I want to do this for hundreds of notes

However I have had no success finding an easy workflow. In Kontakt I can assign a CC controller to "tune" and then draw an appropriate envelope. But I can find no method (in reaper) to easily ensure the pitch moves only one semitone.

It has been suggested that I go into Kontakt and set(Instrument) Options
PB Range.

But apparently that is not an option in the instruments I want to use (KH Concert Strings for example)

any suggestions?

thanks, woggle

Go to Automation tab on the left side, select your MIDI CC assignment, scale it with From: and To: controls in bottom left to ensure that CC range of 0-127 goes only a semitone up or down.

But I would suggest using host automation instead of MIDI CC instead, since it will provide much more resolution than 128 CC steps.

thanks - I had hoped to lock the automation to an individual item but this does not seem to be possible so I will go down the host automation route. 128 steps is good enough for pitch - that is changes of less than a cent, which is less than discrimination thresholds, but I take your point

If you go in both directions (semitone up AND down), then the changes are more than a cent, because you have 128 steps, but 200 cents in the range...

You can lock the automation to a single item if you use MIDI CCs, though. Your choice.

thanks again, just up a semitone so 128 is fine, I think render to audio then process might be the way to go for this specific problem

MIDI Pitchbend is 14-bit which is 8192 steps, + and - (0-16383).
I do long bends which I want to be more or less smooth, 128 isn't going to do it. YMMV -
But I would not expect a semitone over a whole minute to be smooth at all at that resolution.

So, you can set the Kontakt instrument to have a total range of a semitone if you like and use the pitchbend lane.

That's true. However if the library doesn't have pitch bend modulator set up and is locked for editing, automating the master tune knob is about the only thing you can do...

Oh huh, yeah I failed to read that :idiot:
I saw Kontakt & duduk. Which allows you to set it.

I wouldn't use CC in any case, not fine enough. You have answered the question already. :)

For quick changes they might work. For long bends/slides, yeah, it wouldn't quite work, but host automation would.
