I would like to get a little more broad range of CPU usage between high end Intel, AMD XP, AMD64, and Opteron processors running different plugins. I've seen the Sonar and Cubase tests, but that's for a fixed project with plugins I normally wouldn't use. So, those of you with higher end machines, would you mind posting what you have and see if we can get a small cross section of different machines? Currently, I'm running

Intel P4 2.53ghz 533FSB
1 Gig RDRam PC1066

If someone with an AMD XP 3200+ with DDR400, an AMD64 machine, an Intel P4 3.2 or 3.4Ghz with 800FSB, and a high end Opteron system could respond, that be great. I'd like to get an idea of how much of an improvement one could expect with some of the heavy hitters, like Rhino, z3ta+, abSynth, etc. I could even make up projects with the files to be downloaded as well. I'll get to that once we got a small list of machines.

So who's up for this? I'm sure some of the lower spec'ed system guys would like to see what kind of bang for the buck they'll get when they upgrade.

Im upgrading my OC'd-to-XP2500 to an XP3200 in the next coupla months. But I wont be able to comment till then...

Doesn't sound like you need an upgrade to me. You said that using 3 plugins took 60%+ of your CPU.. what 3 plugins? What sequencer, also? I don't think even my 1.3ghz machine used that much.

Since I'll be building a new computer in the next several months, I'd like to see the results of this. I run quite a few CPU gobblers and need some more power- i.e. Athlon 64, SATA drives, DDR 400, etc etc...

Give me a few weeks, if you can wait that long, I'm building a dual Opteron 250 and a FX 53 Socket 939. From the research that we've been doing these machines are probably the fastest and most stable machines on the market (desktop, we have not looked into the world of the supercomputers).

Both machines will have 10,000 RPM SATA drives in a striped Raid configuration, 4 for the Opteron and 2 for the FX 53, 4 gigs and 2 gigs of memory, the sound and video cards are yet to be determined.

But if you want to find out how they come out shot me a message in about 2 weeks and I'll share our findings with you.

BTW, right now we are using a dual 2.8 Xeon and a 2.8 P4, both machines run great and with the dual machine I regulary record up 32 tracks of audio with no problems.

The dual is for audio recording and effects processing. The Fx 53 is for synths and other audio apps (Live, Reason, Project 5, Kontakt).

I'll be using A Tyan board for the Dual and a MSI for the Fx 53.

Do you have DDR400 ram? That's my main interest for sure. I'm thinking about picking plugs that have functional demos as well for the heavy hitters so it won't matter if you own it or not. Like z3ta+, rhino, Sytrus, etc. I'd like to get a webpage together for this too. Be nice for people to be able to download several 'benchmark' tests so they can see what it'll do on their machine for different purposes. Hard to encompass 'everything', but something a little more comprehensive would be nice.

Ya, I can wait. I'm not buying a new computer tomorrow.

I just want realistic numbers from vsti's in different applications.

I have an HP 3ghz/4 processor here at work I'll be glad to run CPU tests on if needed. It's not a custom machine by any means, but it's still a valid machine to spec as not everyone has the skill & time to forge thier own custom desktop unit.

Yippy!

That's one of the big ones I wanted to see.

Sickle, no problem with joining too. I just want my machine to be the lowest end.

Anyone else? I'm trying to get this thing organized for a webpage too.

While I still really don't think you need an upgrade, I'd be glad to help you test. I have a P4 3.0 ghz processor (800mhz bus, 1mb cache) and two sticks of 1GB DDR400 RAM.

CPU power thread! Monster machine ppl, look inside
