The title is it, I would like to check out a daw that allows groove extraction (ie timing and velocity) from audio to midi. Even if that is all it does and I use the midi in another daw that would be fine

Any thoughts on cheapest and easiest?

Ableton does that. It is easy, but not cheap ;)

Have you tried the Ableton demo, I know you used to be able to drag and drop frozen audio out to a folder, perhaps you can do this with other media too

I looked on the website and it seems the groove extraction is not available in the lite/cheap version

The Lite version is not the demo. The demo is fully functional iirc ...

Thanks, but the full version is a bit more than I can justify. I sort of indicated that earlier above

We're suggesting you try it with the demo.

While it didn't used to allow exporting you could work around this by drag and drop to an OS folder.

Before I bought it I would freeze tracks in the demo and drag and drop the audio to Windows desktop.

It could be that you can do something similar with groove modified clips.

The older Live 8 Lite can extract grooves (note: it doesn't run on Win 8/10).

[edit: I wasn't able to run Live Lite 8 on Win 10, but seems others managed to.]

[ 2019 edit: This needs correction, my old Lite 8 license got transformed into Lite 10 when they launched Live 10 Lite, so I think it may not be possible to get a Lite 8 license anymore. If there are any unregistered keys out there, they will probably get upgraded to 10 when you register.]

I have a copy for sale ... :)

Or you could try Audio Gaming's free Groove Extractor plugin.

AFAIK, that option is not the same as AUDIO > MIDI. This option only appeared on Live 9.
