hi everyone,

I'm trying to do some work to create a typical tango music small orchestra sound, aka, orquesta tipica. Typically, you have violins (~2-3), viola, cello, ~2 bandoneons (reed instrument), piano and double bass.

I'm looking for a library that is not really geared towards the film or cinematic type of sound. More along the lines of solo instruments and closely mic'ed likely. I don't need super high end quality... is there something that's not gigantic and affordable? My main search right now is to get violins, viola, cello and potentially double bass. I have piano and bandoneons covered...

iirc spitfire's got a nice chamber strings thing

Hein's solo instruments do the business just fine for most small band stuff I've done

I'm not sure what affordable means, I'd google up solo string packs and string quintet vsts / kontakt instruments. Solo strings can be tougher to find than string ensembles or sections as they have to sound 'realer' than sections.

Unfortunately you missed recent sales on a lot of solo strings including Hunter, Fluffy and the really nice Embertone String Quintet for $200. If you can wait the sales might come around again.

LA scoring strings has smaller sections(its separated into groups A B C per section) as well as first chairs(and some 2nd chairs).

you could build it entirely out of first chairs in theory.

first chairs aren't really "soloists"

I'd suggest sample modeling but they don't have bass yet.

I wasn't a huge fan of those TBH... Kirk's concert brass is a hidden gem, but the strings weren't my cup of tea

I tend to agree and actually skipped them on sale for $62.50, but they were the cheapest I could think of that rose to the level of reasonably professional. Actually I think the violins in his full older orchestra are better.

Another thought is the VSCO2 which is a reasonably priced and nice chamber orchestra, though imo the brass and woodwinds are stronger than the strings. I'm completely biased as I worked on the free community version and regard the dev as a friend.

Yeah that said, cheaper isn't always better... ivr had to "rebuy" libraries that didn't cut it too often... would have been cheaper buying the right one the first time

Thanks everyone. Aren't first chairs geared more towards classical sounding strings? This is why I was thinking I'd need more to deal with solo versions that have a wider gamut. Tempted by the Chris Hein's Solo strings, any input on that ? Also looking at the Spitfire's chamber strings (I guess these were previously sable?) but worried that they may be very classical sounding.

Tango's Orquesta tipica's don't sound like classical music!

Well, typically a sampler library will provide superior articulation to soloist instruments than with section 1st chair.
I'm not that up on Tipica or precisely what's uniquely articulated. But more articulate tends to mean more expenditure.

I would say that the GPO, Halion Symphonic, Miroslav Phil are not very apt suggestions to the purpose.
I don't like Kirk Hunter strings at all.

I would note Miro 2 light edition is on sale at JRR shop or was recently for $42 and it has solo instruments including all four strings. So in a sense it might work, the strings tend toward warm, a bit damp and vibrato.

From a midi just using the sustains aka anyone can make it sound better... Miro 2, Kontakt Factory and 2 Kirk Hunter violin sustain patches...
