Tangerine Dream (at least those that remained after Froese) did a cover of Stranger Things, which in my opinion, actually sounds better than the original (although I have complete respect for SURVIVE). It uses more modern techniques, and so has a fuller more high production type sound:

You know, I admit it. I'm a synth junkie. I've got a habit that's so bad it's going to bankrupt me one day. But even I don't love everything that's ever been made. But good grief, some people don't have anything positive to say about synths or very little. I mean all you have to do is read the comments. They're all there. As Fluffy said, he doesn't delete anything. I mean man, if you don't love this stuff what the heck are you doing here? LOL.

With that, I'm going to listen to some Tangerine Dream

Okay, then I'm not crazy. I do remember the conversation. So if you really don't "love" any synths, how can a person possibly expect you to comment on an all synth recording and like it?

The point is, your response to that video doesn't surprise me. And I just wanted to point out to the person responding that they felt it did what it set out to do that he needed to understand where the response was coming from, a person who is, as you yourself said, is not a synth junkie.

And don't get me wrong. I don't think every synth ever made sounds great. There are quite a few I think sound like crap. But I'll be willing to be dollars to donuts that if I listed 50 different synths that I loved, there'd be maybe a half dozen at best that you even liked at all. And with that I think I'm being generous.

Which is why it still boggles my mind why you hang out here so much.

I don't hang out at hip hop forums. I don't hate hip hop, but don't love it enough to hang out at one. I don't hang out at jazz forums. I don't hate jazz. In fact, I've done a couple of jazz pieces. But I just don't love it enough to hang out at them.

You are here quite a bit and unlike most people here who apparently ARE synth junkies, that just boggles my mind. What do you find so fascinating about this place if, at best, you can take synths or leave them?

Why not? I do like a couple of synths (Sylenth1 most of all). Synths/romplers are all I have for making music as I don't play any instruments except for a little bass, so naturally I am here. Indeed, I don't have anything in common with the EDM crowd here, they are another world and generation. But that doesn't mean I can't use the same stuff they use, I just hijack it for other genres
Basically, I don't like music where synths are the center of attention, i.e. I rarely listen to modern instrumental music. I only like synths as adornment in regular songs with singers and all. There are few exceptions such as Kool and the Gang's Summer Madness, which I truly love despite its dominating synth solo.

Okay, I gotta ask. The synth on this that's doing the low end "bong" (I think it's an F sharp) what the hell synth is that? I have never heard a soft synth with a low end like that. Is it the synth out of the box or is that just a crap ton of processing that makes it sound like that?

You play me a recording of a soft synth that sounds like that and I will go out and buy it right now.

That's where I think hardware just blows software right out of the water. That was rich and thick and fat and just plain freaking awesome and that's off a crappy Youtube video.

But don't you find using real instruments more satisfying? I mean when I do my rock stuff, I almost never touch a synth. I'll use drums, MODO bass, my virtual guitars and some strings here and there. And that's pretty much it. If it wasn't for prog rock and EDM, I wouldn't need synths at all.

Hadn't heard that one before. Much prefer the original. I think this one is way too overproduced and slick and kinda misses the point of the original. Some cool sounds in there for sure, but it's a theme song to a horror show/movie and that seems entirely lost here.

My favourite band.

Their best albums IMO were the three original Berlin School albums: Phaedra, Rubycon and Ricochet. I like most of their eighties stuff, but almost everything after, is a different sound.

Well Stratosphere was right after those 3 in 1976. I was a little late to the party with these guys because in the early to mid 70s I was listening to Genesis, ELP and Yes, among other prog rock bands. I didn't get into Kraftwerk until Autobahn in 1974, missing their first 3 albums.

Sure, I do use drum, percussion, acoustic guitar and brass samples from Air's Xpand a lot. But frankly, since I like old-skool R&B, I am not happy with sampled synth basses, brass pads, pads etc., so I try to make better ones on synths myself. It's also a kind of challenge. I have a lot of spare time, so no problem...
Of course I could buy some mega synth or professional libraries, but that would be too much for an amateur.

To get back to topic, I like the synth basses one can make on Repro-1, not least thanks to the effects. I won't buy a monophonic synth, though, but I am following the Repro-5 project, which looks very promising.

Repro 5 has me curious but I'm not 100% sure it's something I'm going to be getting. Honestly, I wasn't a huge Prophet 5 fan when it was all the rage. I thought the Prophet VS was much more interesting, even though it wasn't nearly as popular. Now a great emulation of THAT, I would get in a heartbeat.

Repro 5 has me curious but I'm not 100% sure it's something I'm going to be getting. Honestly, I wasn't a huge Prophet 5 fan when it was all the rage. I thought the Prophet VS was much more interesting, even though it wasn't nearly as popular. Now a great emulation of THAT, I would get in a heartbeat.

There is the V by Arturia which has the V and VS emulated, but anyway.. back on topic....I love Repro-1 and can't wait for Repro 5.

Repro-1 sounds so good that I can't even imagine a poly version.

I mean, saturation per voice, sounds extremely interesting. I'm very much interested in Repro-5 (especially as I moaned about Repro-1 being monophonic) but it all comes down to CPU usage. I'm going to guess price will be around $99 if it goes introductory price first. And yes, I also love the VS sounds. I think Arturia's is still extremely good and worth using.

Oh don't get me wrong. I like Arturia's VS. But I think U-he would do a better job.
