Alchemy is a beast of a synth - if you like evolving/morphing/droning type of music. I have Mainstage as well. It also has the Auto Sampler, which makes sampling instruments a breeze and is also more than worth the price of admission. Press Sample, and let it hit the range of notes you wanted, at whatever velocity ranges you determined, etc. Go have a cup of coffee, and come back to a newly sampled instrument.[/quote]RequiemMachine wrote:Don't forget, the Full version of Alchemy comes in Mainstage as well. That's one hell.if a value for one beast of a synth ($29 for Mainstage). Not to mention it includes their other synths too.festeringheap wrote: No big deal, only 6 votes were cast.
I left to try out Logic X, after a series of successive meager updates made me skip multiple Reason versions. Not sure if I felt that Propellerhead was trying to take advantage of the existing user base, but really? - 129 for a new browser and a new skin on the transport controls? Come on, guys! Really?
I always recommended Reason to anyone before, but now, if they own a mac, my first choice to them is Logic X. 169$ for what you get is insane. (It's 199, but you can often get 100$ gift cards at 20% off and use them to buy Logic). And you get Alchemy as well - and that was a free update. I started out with Windows, so I didn't have the option of using Logic. Don't regret the Reason purchase, though. It's a cool visual virtual studio.
VST support is great, but I'll wait until at least version 10 to upgrade. It needs way more VST features, although the way they have implemented the VST so far, appears elegant. Strange word to use, I suppose, but Reason is very visual in a good way, that is conducive to creating.
The mixer seems out of place. It's retro analogue cool, but they need drag and drop inserts, and hide/show channels and folders. Projects can just get stupid big. I'm bouncing out to Logic half the time when I use Reason.
Not sure if I "left", as I am 50-50 with the 2 DAWs, so I haven't voted yet.
Reason "VST" poll: For those who "left", how many of you will consider using Reason now?

I'm considering buying now with VST support; quick question, this might be a totally dumb one..
it says VST support, but does that include audio units (AU) too?

Surely not. Wouldn't make much sense either, as AU only plugins are a rarity.Lostinthamusic wrote:I'm considering buying now with VST support; quick question, this might be a totally dumb one..

No it doesn't support it natively but you should be able to use something like Blue Cat's PatchWork to run AUs inside Reason 9.5.Lostinthamusic wrote:I'm considering buying now with VST support; quick question, this might be a totally dumb one..

Ahh, thanks guys. Was considering this but I'm too dependent on AU.

Mattias specifically mentioned the lack of AU support in their live-stream video. He said they won't add features to Reason that only work on Mac or Windows. It sounds like AU support is unlikely given it's so deeply tied to Mac.Lostinthamusic wrote:Ahh, thanks guys. Was considering this but I'm too dependent on AU.

Actually that's not true. You can map plugin parameters inside Patchwork with MIDI learn and automate those controls from the Reason sequencer.Bereket wrote:But you can't automate if it is inside Patchwork.
I just tried it with Halion Sonic AU in the beta and had no problem automating the Halion's filter cutoff from the Reason sequencer automation lane. Just turned on midi learn inside Blue Cat..moved the dial I wanted to automate which created a mapped control. Then picked that Patchwork control as the automation target in the Reason sequencer.
I also tried pulsar LFO and Matrix to modulate via CV in through Patchwork and it all worked as expected.
Now granted it would be *nice* to have it natively supported because it would reduce the additional screen/mapping. But honestly Patchwork does make it straightforward.
I have a few plug-ins that are only VST3/AU on Mac. At least for me this method will hold me over until proper native support comes.

I was excited to upgrade but I'll be upgrading when you can use midi vst's like midi Guitar (I Have to be able to use this one without having to use a separate midi program) from Jamorigin, import midi to selected track and multiple tracks for multi channel midi files
and drag n drop midi from vst's like
Ezdrummer
BFD
Geist
Addictive Drums
Addictive Keys
Ez Keys
utonic
Maschine
Thesys
And so on
to whatever track I want.

Fair enough. This will only help Mac Cubase users in the long run (increase the market for Mac VST) and most of the bigger developers do VST on Mac in addition to AU (or have they stopped that?).bmrzycki wrote:Mattias specifically mentioned the lack of AU support in their live-stream video. Actually the only Reason they support the VST is cause it is open source. And most probably their Reason patent is about to expire and now anybody will use it specially Bitwig modular everywhere baby and Studio one will come next. And as we all know PH like to go slow and AU gets updated every single time. they can't manage to do that. That is not their business model. You have to wait like 10 years to see VST3 in Reason.Jace-BeOS wrote:Fair enough. I could be wrong, but I thought only VST3 has been open sourced. Reason 9.5's implementation is VST 2.4, but maybe now after 20 years Steinberg's software patents on it have expired? I'm not entirely sure how the licensing on VST2.x used to work.Studio Saturn wrote:Actually the only Reason they support the VST is cause it is open source. Used 2.5 on my G3 CRT iMac in '03 to '05-ish. Discovered KVR within a year or so of this. I became immediately jealous of not only all the VSTi options but moreso the freeware ones. The grass was far more than just greener.
I might consider returning to Reason only if it was as cheap as Reaper.
I fully admit I miss Redrum and the easy simplicity (and all the many packs...whatweretheycalled?...Refills!) with NN-19 and NNXT (or whatever it was).
After all these years, I've never been as successfully creative as I was 13 or so years ago w/ Reason 2.5 with a 600MHz processor and 128MB RAM on Mac OS9.
Sheesh.
Now that I say that 'outloud' it's kinda sad. Heh.
