You™ wrote:To me, creating music is not about how well you play yesterday's traditional instruments or how many chords you know or even whether you can tune a guitar. As more people move toward computer-based performing and recording, the traditional ways of inputing and articulating sound (ahem, data) are inadequate for some artists. Besides strings, mouthpieces, keys, pedals and sticks, we need sliders, knobs, pads, ribbons and other sensors. Like old school electronic music some can't even be made in real-time.
I don't have a problem with electronic or loop or sample-based composition. It's about another way of interpreting what music can be. Frankly I think divorcing oneself of the charge of having to create the source recordings can be liberating in terms of keeping an open mind to the way sounds can be manipulated and and rearranged. I once suggested that the maybe most interesting "DJs" weren't always the most awesome musicians. That's arguable and who knows what DJ means anymore but I think you get my drift.
Music isn't solely the purview of western cultivated, conservatory trained aesthetes. It isn't even the domain of musicians. It's belongs to everyone and it should be made by everyone. In the end, it only matters if it sounds good. Your song sounds good so there!
thanks for taking the time to write this george ...

... it articulates so much of what i think about music too only does it less glibly ...

... at an earlier point in this thread i had a long post typed out about some of these issues but didnt hit submit because it might have come across as whinging and accusatory when it REALLy wasnt - you writing this gives me the chance to throw my main observation into the mix again ...

... while we 2 (AND many others it has to be said) are happy to see loops / found sounds as valid tools / instruments there are always a few 'but its only loops' comments thrown around (hell even i did it myself in relation to this contest track) ...

... however (and heres the actually-not-finger-pointing-though-it-might-sound-like-it bit) there are many here who use stuff like virtual guitarist / slicy drummer / etc and get compliments every time on their riffs / rhythms ... again i have no issues with these tools (i have and occasionally use slicy drummer myself) but the generally positive (or just unnoticed ??? ) perception of their use i find interesting ...

... i hope my genuine curiosity is what comes across here

thanks for the in-depth review BTW ... and ... accessible ??? bloody hell !?!

slainte :P rob

im kind of of the opinion use what ever.my only problem with any usage of loops would be if someone was just grabbing a handful of premade loops and nothing else.even then tho there is the art of composition at play so i guess theres always some merit in someone elses art.
most tend to use loops the way i do myself and process/chop em to unrecognisable quantities anyway and as for slicy drummer et al theyre tools, use em as such.

people shouldnt be so hung up on how a tune is made or what was used,if its a good tune its a good tune 8)

I'm just joshin' about the moods. I don't care what the theme is - I'm just happy to have something to offer.

Jesus this month good! I mean I am sitting here listening to the entries and jsut holding on to the top of my head and saing these guys are so good! Stream of conciousness comment/review as follows:

Dave Spiers DonkeyJazz has me crackin up and groovin at the same time - ApostropheX is the nerdfreak from hip beat-town get down ouch I can't move like that- Knock me up? What ....TrisTezaOrange puts me into a space nonlinearly functional, but so mellow I don't need to breath O2 any longer. ElBaggio does the Canned Heat from Gratefuldeadtown so that even Donkey doing a Kriminal Dance doesn't phase me. What I crave is vocal talent like ColG...or a sense of sang enui like Farlukar's track How the hell am I going to vote for a top ten when I can't stop cycling through this set of tunes. Anastatine gets me walking into equanimity.. thankfully until a quaver of sound Bajungie's my head away - whoa where he'd get that 80's fusion Yellowjackets vibe Bastien '94's the scene delay-away - to ColG freak me - no PLEASE HAL I really don't believe you do feel well - god I used play that fast- Freeztar thanks for slowing me into the Bossa sense - Who is that lovely girl singing with you so sweet?- now where are you going with that B section? Garret Gengler does it again wring a song that goes right into the pocket of who's talking sense anyway yeah not me.. Jeff you F%@^in ROCK (I played that fast once :-o ) ...perfect segue to Haghi's Crossings Borders - too good a track to listen only twice. Backwards portamento in time to Ceyecal - Is that Tera2 or what?...JDG never in my life have imagined these emotions could be tracked ..... OOOH strings from Jebudas - too much time spent messing with GPO these last 12 hours = way on the rever unto sonic heaven from Jeff Dickens- awesome 8) Jens you are full of surprises - never defined always advancing....Knockman "Wild Church" is I don't know but am I seeing Jim Morrison reborn...let's get serious now while Koorby plays the Steinway = nice and orchestrates the night - well done! God I have to dance again 'cause it Kriminal time - how does he get those grooves - so now Mr Me is triipin me over...OK why do I never use vocal sample 'cause there is no way I can sing in a way that won't make the masses puke. God I have to dance Mystahr says so...... it's working OSIFYER. Mets-ens Nuissance-SonaresGlassback franchement les glitchs comme ca peu donnent l'epilepsy  ... Whoa too hard peppy 127 give me fever what the hell are those guitar and bass from?..yeah excellent peppyster. Now everyon edo the Phleep cause it is very wise to tal k like an alien and bounce like so uh uh 1..2 and...what?..3 freaky PHZ is a teacher don't let this get loose Rhythm is sugar - don't we know it.... Chloe is the most popular name in these environs almost named my daughter (Hannah) Chloe cause it's a beauty of a name and this song is so perfect (No 1 or 2 so far along with Sepheritoh superb Way to Freedom magnum opus)- I could dig Elvis Costello doing this song. I can't write any more but I am fain to say congrats to everyone ... Hopefully I can sort out some votes by Sunday 'cause this month's rotation is magic.

I do think this is one of the best month ever. So each Hm and vote really makes me glad. :D

Thanks Tancos for N°1 (always something special), and Wilkoryte for the really unexpected vote .

Hello, Shane Sanders. I liked your tune about Nico, but it doesn't remind me of her at all. I was a freshman in collage when the Velvet Underground came out and it really knocked me over! At that time, the only other big explostion was Frand Zappa (live) but it's nice to remember Nico in words.

The big controversy at the time in our dorm was whether we should tear off the banana sticker that was stuck on the album. It was a time when smoking banana peels was considered a way to get high. Never tried it, but I did try to smoke tea (real tea) and that just made me sick. Ah, those were the days of innocence.

Your tune is really a nice one, though, and makes me think of Leprechauns who have been smoking too much dope.

Honoured (and somewhat shocked) to make it to some people's top ten. Even more shocked to make it to GuitarJeff's number one. :x Holy crap man, what were you thinking? :x

Thanks Rob! I think Yeah I am usually pretty wired by default being a sleep deprived parent for 12 years now. This month is very interesting I must say again. I do know most of the entrant's musical style and have been pleasantly surprised several times. I am halfway through the crop - so back to it.

Cheers,
Gordon

Hey GuitarJeff and Mo Verdigast! Thanks for the votes. :D :D

FZ on a mellow day eh Mo :D :D That waoud be an interesting idea for a contest theme or maybe for a music compilation concept.

Didn't think I would get time to do reviews this month, but knowing how much I appreciate the reviews others give of my stuff, I thought I'd better make a special effort.

These aren't in any order, other than the order that they got queued up in my mp3 player.

Given the lack of time, some of these aren't perhaps as detailed (or accurate) as I may have liked, but are largely based on first impressions.

First block of 15...

donkeyt - 12 Foot lizard
Why does this remind me of Peter Gabriel? This is a well-constructed track. One of the best this month.

Markleford - Don't let Sleek Month Win
Good "novelty track" Good "bop along" value. I liked the horns.

Col G - I Feel Much Better Now
Very interesting counterpoint happening amongst the instruments in the middle section, but the bass driven intro doesn't do much for me, and I didn't care for the fade-out ending

Erki - Fly
Reminiscent of Vangelis, this track evokes a tranquil feel. The bass drum hits at the start hint at something a little more dramatic, which doesn't ever quite eventuate. I couldn't help feeling that it needed to build to something a bit more stirring by the end to hold my attention fully.

Koorby - Reflectitudes Movement 1
Some excellent orchestration in this track, with interesting chord progressions and voicings that make this stand above what could otherwise have been a pretty bland track. The position of the piano in the mix probably needs a little more fine tuning - at times I felt that it could have been made a little more dominant (in the middle section), while at others it was probably a little too dominant (towards the end)

Bagungie - Searching for Quaver #9
Starts promisingly, but the synth brass sounds seemed out of place to me. Well constructed track, but somehow doesn't quite hit the right emotional button for me. Music to be played as telephone "on hold" music?

Sepheritoh - Way to Freedom
Very interesting orchestration, this is a piece that requires full attention in order to be fully appreciated. The guitar seemed a little prominent in the mix for my taste.

Paradiddle - I meant it
Interesting synth lead sound, but needed more variation/breaks in the drum loop. Also needs more dynamic variation. Ends very abruptly.

Haghi - Crossing Borders
This is an interesting soundscape, but needed a melody or theme to anchor the track - sounded like the bridge section of a much longer track. Maybe this is why the fade-out ending?

Shane Sanders - Nico Was a Strange Girl
The violin/fiddle makes this track stand out, as well as some really interesting and weird sounding synth sounds. One of the better tracks this month.

Pheeleep - DB
Very uncluttered and simple but highly effective, Excellent mix holds this all together. I'm normally ambivalent about this type of music, but this track works for me.

GuitarJeff - Free for All
Great guitar work, and a catchy hard-rockin' tune with great vocal work. One of the standouts tracks for me.

Ixox - From East Europe
THe title certainly captures the soul of this music. Sounds as though it could easily have been recorded live in some dingy bar in that part of the world. The violin carries this track. A good, original piece of music.

vishalshetye - The KVR - I'm lovin it
Interesting amalgam of sounds, some of which work, others don't. The Slayer guitar is one of those that doesn't work for me, which is a pity as it figures predominantly. The vocal creates an interesting tonal/textural mix in places, but in a lot of places it is either too far back in the mix, or would be better eliminated in place of other instruments.

Nuisance Sonores - Glass Tank
Fascinating sounds - sounds like a demo of what can be achieved from some synth, but is this music? Not to my taste, despite the obvious technical competence on display.

GORDON! Very fun to see this side of you. That was a real entertaining review post. Many similar emotions felt. And thanks for your kind words on my track.

Crud, I was going to go back and catch up on reviews and votes and say thanks to everyone. I just don't have time though. I need to vote and all. However, I'm grateful for the reviews, whether they are favorable to my tune or not (which many were :o ). :) Thanks. I did manage keep up with the thread...
