Kontakt 6 - any rumors about release?

That's not good at all. I use the vst version and I'll end up having 3 versions installed when K6 is out. Just to keep compatibility with old projects. Useless waste of space and computer power

Yes, this drives me crazy. I have many projects in the pipeline that will have to get massive changes in plugins when I finally leave Snow Leopard. Anything developers can do to simplify that when going from version to version is helpful. So far, there's nothing in my 3rd-party collection that will be automatic.spinettim wrote:This is my new number one request to Native Instruments. TOTAL backward compatibility should be priority for every plugin maker IMO! Stop calling it Kontakt 4, Kontakt 5... Just call it Kontakt so all my new and old projects call just one plugin. Stop the confusion.mumpcake wrote:It would also be cool if they could figure out a way to get it to replace my older versions of Kontakt in all of my unfinished projects.
Spectrasonics did it with Omnisphere and I can never thank them enough for that!

Well... I'm fine with it. I just edit my project files in a text editor and replace plugin names, it works. Thanks to Reaper for making it so easy, since the project file is human readable (and editable).spinettim wrote:That's not good at all. If your DAW is not so friendly, you should probably take some time and save Kontakt instances in your older projects as multis, then load them in the latest Kontakt version that you have, then resave the projects.
At any rate this will not be retrogradely possible for VST/AAX for technical reasons, if NI ever decides to have just one Kontakt plugin ID (but I am not betting on that happening at all).
Waste of space? Perhaps. Computer power? Nope.

^^^
One thing that I am not clear about - are the Kontakt Factory libraries backwards-compatible (if that is the right direction).
Say I have a project using K5 and some Factory instruments (i.e. from the K5 Factory library). I then uninstall / delete the K5 Factory library, install K6 and its library, and edit my Reaper project file to load K6 instead of K5.
Will this now load the instruments correctly from the K6 Factory library? (Or do I have to keep the K5 Factory library installed 'for ever'?)

Nope, it won't, it will still look for K5 factory library. Editing the Reaper project file just changes which plugin gets loaded - it doesn't do anything to the plugin chunk, which holds all the information about the patches that are loaded, and those patches will still expect their samples to be where they were the last time project was worked on.

Explains why I never saw that happen, I used the AU of K4 and K5 in VE Pro.

Sure hope they do indeed.EvilDragon wrote:...............

The past is the past and nothing can be done about that, but certainly they can fixed the vst id from Kontakt 5 onwards.

But I don't think they want to leave the possibility of having multiple versions installable side by side. They NEVER did that. All major version products they ever did since the company existed were like that.
That's why I think it will never happen, so live with it. AU/Logic guys at least have a solution.

@ ED, thank you for the clarification; I thought that that might be the case.

Sadly I have to agree with your reasoning.EvilDragon wrote:But I don't think they want to leave the possibility of having multiple versions installable side by side. They NEVER did that. All major version products they ever did since the company existed were like that.

Ehh, you can just save out the ensembles and load them in wherever. They're always forward-compatible. I've gone through a couple kontakt editions just doing it that way. You start to name things in your project to make it easier when you do.EvilDragon wrote:Well... I'm fine with it. I just edit my project files in a text editor and replace plugin names, it works. Hm.. Good to know that the factory library is not "backwards compatible",
anyway, I think I don't even use it, since I have some "non-factory" library.
But this brings up the question of deleting the whole factory stuff,
i think I will do it. (but first uninstall factory)

Thank you. This is great to know. What about Kontakt content? Do new versions come with all the old content?EvilDragon wrote:https://support.native-instruments.com/ ... KONTAKT-5-
Edit: locations may differ but the presence of the content is the important part.
