1. Practice
2. Listen to their music and try to figure out why it speaks to you
3. Practice that
4. Listen to their influences and figure out why they are inspiring (This is crucial so that you don't just imitate your favorite artists, but understand a bit about where they're coming from and how to stay true to the idea while putting your own spin on it)

I really don't. I create what I can create and that I enjoy creating. When I feel gaps that matter to me, I work on those gaps, but those gaps aren't driven by any comparisons with other musicians, simply by music that I'd like to be able to play/create, but can't.
That said, I play for my own amazement. You shouldn't take my advice if you still believe that you will be able to sell your music to other people.

Perfect. To extend the time between steps 6 and 7, try doubling the amount of money spent on said plugin with each iteration of the loop.Vortifex wrote:1) Immediately become depressed at my relative lack of talent

Less mousing and practice more!
(because working with mouse can reduce versatility of our hands/fingers, just imho)
Look! I play better than Sambora now!

i agree, a "simple" mix can sound better than a never-ending well-worked" mix...ghettosynth wrote:Perfect. Pick a fav track and try to imitate it as close as possible - like, really as close as possible - that extra effort and process - trying techniques and searching for info - will teach you loads and give you insight.
