Hi there,
after Chris Cornell passed away I started to listen to the fantastic first Audioslave record again. I found a mysterious grunting noise on "What You Are" shortly before the word "myself" (just before 0:49).
Does anybody have an idea what it might be? Does it even come from his mouth?
Thanks and R.I.P.

To me it doesn't sound like part of the same track or even a vocal sound. More like a happy mistake. Never noticed it before though. Is it something to do with the hihat? Kind of sounds like the hats dip where that sound occurs.

Could be some scratching noise indeed. But in the mix it doesn't sound like it comes from the drums.
