AudioThing Outer Space - Tape Echo - NEW v2.1

"Outer Space is a faithful emulation plugin of a famous vintage tape echo"
The Roland Re-201?
Now i really wonder...
The Space Echo's 3 tape heads have fixed distances.. a fixed relation.
In UAD Galaxy Echo (an emulation of Re-201) are always fixed positions of the heads.
The manual says: In Sync, only the leading head can be synced precise to note values.
And other Heads timings are indicated by +/-, if they are not precise on note values... because the distance is fixed and it is not possible.
In Outer Space demo/manual i see nothing about that.
Explain your approach/idea/setup, please?
How did you implement this?
In ms when you dial the rate knob it always stays in fixed relation to each other.
UAD manual says:
Head 1: 69 ms - 177 ms
Head 2: 131 ms - 337 ms
Head 3: 189 ms - 489 ms
Outer Space manual says: Nothing.
I found out..:
1: 60 ms - 175 ms
2: 115 ms - 340 ms
3: 175 ms - 500 ms
In sync all OuterSpace-timings can be mixed up and when you dial the rate you get some chaos...bs.
The manual says nothing about head timing relation.

You can have the normal "RE201" behaviour by disabling the sync and just moving the Repeat Rate knob. This will keep the heads distance fixed, like the original.Klinke1 wrote:Explain your approach/idea/setup, please?
However, I wanted to give a bit more freedom to Outer Space users. So you can easily dial in whatever ms or synced value you want for each head, even if it means moving Head 2 before Head 1. While in Sync, if you space the heads and then use the Repeat Rate knob, Outer Space will try to keep that synced space. However, this behaviour is not ideal since when you move the rate while synced you'll get big jumps resulting in a not very natural pitch mess

Thanks for the reply!

*tries to brain-schtorm..
You could sync the first head, then the others keep the relation -> and then put in "scaling in %" so you can be a bit off, but still in sync and relation.. all the time.
ima gonna build it in Reaktor like i want it.
With "Sync" and smooth "Scaling"..in sync..and adjustable relation of the heads.

This is the basic algorithm for 2 heads. (..Full Stereo)
Set up like that, echo and feedback behave like OuterSpace.
(Tried with 2x Replika modern - LowCut75Hz HiCut:6k)
Now i build it in Reaktor in tape-style..With the fixed relation etc.
I am going to do that.. because i am curious now.
And maybe you are interested in trying ..
I definitely consider buying OuterSpace.

Cool! Sure, I'll try other options to keep the relation of the head in sync, but as said before, I don't really think that it's a great idea moving the rate knob when in sync. You won't get the same nice smooth doppler effect as when it's in ms.Klinke1 wrote:

1.: I bet you can do it much better than me..
Maybe this inspires you.
edit: The last head is the leading head.(which the other heads follow)
Sounds like philosophics..
----------------------------------------------
Ok..i said it.. i do it:
Reaktor 6 Ensemble..SpaceEcho with 2 Heads:
-adjustable time relation
-Scale/Rate for sync and milliseconds.
-..But can also have both heads independent with Ms/sync..both with offset option for each head..then scale all..etc.
Go sync but be a bit off, if you like..your choice
- Head 1+3 and 2+3 presets (in sync: Dial in sync-time and the head 1 or 2 will follow. Then all can be scaled with the rate-knob.
-AB Mod inputs (The bright knobs - Bright knobs are "main control"! Others are secondary)
-Added Head Volume and Pan (pan/volume is in feedback path but it can do some nice things)
-Full Stereo
I am happy with it.
(the ms can differ a bit from OuterSpace or GalaxyEcho)
Like in the original.

My findings:
Now in know why Soundtoys made Echoboy with Swing/Shuffle.
Re-201 Head1+3 and 2+3 produce swing/shuffle.. with fixed relation.
..but the RE-201 dual/triple-head-mode feedback behaviour is special and can build up alot of Echos when Feedback is high.
Single Head produce normal feedback.
2 heads was a great idea when "Ikutaro Kakehashi" designed this in the late 60's. (but the fixed heads were limiting)
So,nobody later copied that..afaik.
2/3 heads are some kind of special effect.. imho. But can also be very cool and produce another springy flavor. (next to the reverb)
Normally i would rather use 2 Single-head delays in serial with mix for both. Or with feeback from second to first.
Funny: Replika cannot do "shuffle (or was it swing)..Like Echoboy and Re-201. Replika does only put the first Echo later...not earlier)
BTW.. My "older" WonderEcho does it all.
.ens here:
https://en.file-upload.net/download-125 ... F.zip.html
I also made Space Echo in H3000 Factory and it sounds good. 2 Heads with Mono-In (In H3000 one can assign exactly between what ms it should scale..but the syncing is a bit arkward)
Maybe this inspires you.

Can you attach the preset here? Thanks ...Klinke1 wrote:...

I made 16 Presets to chose with the GUI-numpad.
There are some things i would like to change:
There is a pitch-shifter for slight detuning..it is not in feedback-path + it adds 10 ms delay.. So i substracted it from the main delay.
((I dunno why they not just modulated the delay-time in the preset.))
-I used the UAD timings from the manual.
-wide presets are with 2 PitchShifters and PitchShift+10ms delay offset at output)
It's a modded Analog-Delay 2 preset. (preset 4.. or close by)
(file attached)

H3000
3 options used in the presets (the 16 current-presets have names):
MS with time scale (softknob).
Sync with time-scale.
And sync with host-Sync off to scale with the "BPMs".
What sucks is: Syncing doesn't work .. when the a softknob is scaling the time. (it changes the behaviour.)
----
Edit: My H3000 presets.. Turn the Filter down to 2-3kHz.
-
Too much level into and inside(feedback) H3000 makes it crap out.
----
Edit 2:
The Reaktor.ens:
yes..i forgot to turn on the "wide" option + some old knob-infos.
I will upload that soon.. Then it is complete.

Done.
Reaktor SpaceEcho ..optimized. (Tool tips, noise color..wide-mode)
(The modulation can sound similar to Softube Tape..wtf..
Try Softube Tape: Stability 93,5% / 50%Mix
vs the ensemble: Flutter 0,5 / 50%mix / filters fullrange
Then go up.. (default is 1)

In other news, how's the back panel mod coming along, can you throw a few crumbs out on what may have made the cut ?audiothing wrote:Thanks Klinke1, I'll test it when I have some spare time.

For sure:Richard deHove wrote:In other news, how's the back panel mod coming along, can you throw a few crumbs out on what may have made the cut ?
- Head 1-2-3 Pan
- Head 1-2-3 Volume
- Feedback LoCut and HiCut
- Tape Pre-Emphasis (amount)
- Right Channel Stereo Delay (amount in ms)
- Meter Selector (input or output)
There are still many other suggestions I've received that I'd like to add, but the space is limited and I don't want to go too far from the original idea.
The beta for this rear panel is still a bit far though, as I'm working on a few new plugins and updates.
