I've noticed this for many years now, and it's a strang phenomenon:

Musicians have much bigger egos than other creative people.

I've been an artist, musician, writer, photographer, and director for many years now, and have interacted with other professionals in all those fields--and by far, the musicians always have the biggest egos. Why is that? Is it because of the whole history of the rebellious rock & roll image that musicians feel entitled to?

In art, literature, photography, and film, the creative minds tend to be a lot more humble, respectful of others' critical acclaim/success..etc. Sure, in the other fields, we'd still sit around and diss so-and-so latest film, or so-and-so's crappy bestseller novel..etc, but it's never as rampant and extreme as the way musicians tout their own horn and diss the much more talented, critically acclaimed, and successful musicians.

Just find it interesting, that's all.

And no, I'm not criticizing or taking sides. I'm one of you afterall.

I haven't had personal encounters with any famous creative-types in ANY field of art, so I can only speak about the amateur level.

The most egotistical people I've met aren't musicians but stage directors. I agree with what you say about rock stars, that maybe they feel culturally "entitled" to their ego because of rock's infamy and history. However, stage directors have been told since day zero that they are entitled to be tyrants and that it's OK to have an ego because without one they'd never be able to stage a production that has a unified creative vision.

In terms of famous people... from what I've observed, rock musicians are probably amongst the most egotistical demographic. Famous painters and sculptors throughout history have been no picnic, either.

Actually, now that I'm working it out, I think that it's a function of the public's response to these artist that is more of a factor. Rock stars might be more egotistical because the public are willing to idolize them more than other areas of creative art. The only comparison are movie stars, so it's not surprise that they date each other so often.

quite true, when someone slams my music I take it as a good sign. You can tell when someones being genuin and when their insecurities are taking over. Like this guy, I accidently posted on alternative instead of rock...but the arguement good be made that it is alternative...he slams me then compliments me...he's right about my vocals but I admit that all over my page.
Hey Dude....

There isn't a single song on your web page that is classified as alternative, stop fishing BSP in this genre....

Have the f**king sack to put your shit up against people in your genre...

BTW your music is ok, but your vocals suck.....

on a positive note you're obviously a talented lead guitar player....
find a band, make good music, colaborate, stop trying to do it all yourself.
the sad fact is I'm not putting my music up against anyone,,,just sharing...

I think when English speakers says "big ego," that translates as "lack of social grace" to other languages. :D Maybe writers and painters care more about their social grace, so they don't try to make them look like an immature insecure person.

But I don't think musicians tend to be immature or bigger egoed. If you're talking about people in discussion forums like K-v-R, you're talking about the internet culture in which people can afford to behave like a child, I think.

some are of the "I'm with the band" attitude and others like myself are humbled and appreciative of our talent...I can't see using it to put myself on a pedalstal, I'm just happy to have a gift... :)

did someone mention the word ego ? :D

Someone can easily become a prey of believing in "the self" to much, especialy when someone is overcompensating something else. The biggest EGO`s i met in life were stubborn dissatisfied schoolteachers lacking empathy for there scouts, or parents without a raising / educational certificate taking there miserable lifes out on there kids who will form a inferiority complex which will later result in a superiority complex.

you could also start with the question : why would someone so desperately want to become a popstar :?:
