IK are asking users (who pay a lot of money, relatively) to use a generic audio driver (ASIO4ALL) when needing to use their devices with a PC or MAC?

Really!!??

I have just purchased a laptop for live work and just assumed a comapny as large as IK would simply have a driver like pretty much any other company creating PC interfaces, I didn't bother to check first, BIG mistake it seems!

Why is this IK Multimedia?

The iRig is a usb device compliant interface designed for Apple (TM) iWare, not yer bog-standard Windows machines. Hence no Asio driver has been developed. Otherwise it would have cost you a tenner more.

yeah - good point. It still rankles a bit that it is touted as being for PC users as well, but then they dump it out to a 3rd party freebie that isn't "truly" a dedicated ASIO driver...more just a "wrapper".

Thanks for the response though :)

Luckily I found this out before I pulled the trigger on it. Not that ASIO4ALL will not get the job done, it just seemed a bit odd. As well you are depending on a driver not affiliated with IK so if ASIO4ALL goes south, what then?

I'd say give Asio4all a chance though. If the IK standard device driver is decent, then Asio4all will go smoothly as well.

What if Asio4all goes south? Then we still have the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, so you can download the installer. "As is" ofcourse. But the project is quite mature and way too popular. It would not surprise me it then goes Open Source so even then support does not end.

Playing the devils advocate: what if IK had distributed Asio4All rebranded as Asio4iRig? You'd never know, probably not even complain...

Very true but at least then they would be responsible for updating and whatnot.....though you are right; the likelihood ASIO4ALL totally disappearing is most likely slim to none. I guess it just seems they are taking a shortcut by using a 3rd party.

IK Multimedia wrote:Although it is a 3rd party driver, we have tested it in several Windows configurations with good results. This 3rd party driver allows you to select different input and output sources, which is needed since iRig PRO does not offer an output.
Those last words (the absence of an output on the iRig) are of utter importance, because the ASIO specs say a host can only have one ASIO device active. So the ASIO device for your inputs must be the same as for your outputs. So if the iRig had it's own ASIO device, if you'd select that then you'd have no ASIO outputs. Which renders it a bit unusable...

It is fully usable. By following the steps in the FAQ at www.ikmultimedia.com/faq/3615 you can use iRig Pro as input and another interface as output. This also works for iRig HD and similar interfaces.

erm the iRig Pro DOES have outputs... a L/R 1/4" set of jacks and a headphone jack....unless I am misunderstanding your meaning of "output" ??

Oh and for the record I HAVE used asi4all before, and in real world terms (as in live performance) the latencies claimed do not really work all that well. Particularly when using multiple VSTi's.

IMO, this is a lazy attempt by IK to claim full interoperability with PCs/Macs when in fact it is a 3rd party providing this. For devices as expensive as the iRig Pro Duo, I would ahve expected a little more than "work-around" solutions.

Anyhoo, it is what it is and IK certainly are not going to change its stance and start providing drivers, so I now need to deal with it or just accept it can only REALLY work properly with an iOS/Android type system and move on to something else.

I was more creating this thread as a heads up when people search for info on the product so that they are aware and do not make the same assumptions I did!

I see outputs too. :P
IK probably calculated if the loss of customers that care for ASIO drivers offsets the driver development cost...
Also, them being honest about it will probably result in more "angry" people then the diplomatic stance.

Post

haha, true. Although these days I cannot see creating a driver would actually cost them that much tbh :)

As I sort of said before, it is what it is. I was just surprised there wasn't one. I guess the device IS primarily targeted to the iOS/Android market!! So PC support was always goingto be limited.

Yes, iRig Pro DUO does have outputs, clearly. Someone mentioned [edit - technically, quoted an IK response about iRig PRO] the interfaces that do not have outputs like iRig Pro so my reply is to them (and who I quoted, where iRig Pro is mentioned specifically). They are different interfaces.
