Hi,
I wanted to remake Hot Butters version of Popcorn in Fl Studio with Sylenth and I was quiet successful up to now but I don't get the sound, which kicks in at 1:08:
I have really no clue, it's some kind of brass but I'm not able to remake it. Any ideas how to do it? Most of the other sounds are quiet simple but this is th only one which causes problems,

This is a pretty old topic but I thought I'd revive it since I've also been working on a re-creation of this song as an exercise in sound design. To my ears it sounds like a saw wave running through an arp with some delay. Here's what I did in Sylenth:
Oscillator A1: Saw Wave Voice: 1 Polyphony: 2
Amp Envelope- Attack: .9 Decay: 0 Sustain: 8 Release: 5
Filter A- Lowpass: 12db Cutoff: 435 Hz Resonance: 2.3 Drive: 3.25
In the menu section:
ARPEG: checked settings- mode: UpDown2 Time: 1/16T Octave: 2
DELAY: checked settings- Delay L and Delay R: 1/4T Dry/Wet: 40%
Any settings not mentioned will be left at their default initialized state
Trigger with the appropriate triads with your keyboard or in your DAW's MIDI editor.
It ain't perfect but I think it's pretty close. If anyone wants to chime in and correct me, please do! Hope this helps somebody.

If you're talking about the lead synth, it sounds like 2 sawtooth or a sawtooth and pulse wave an octave apart and detuned slightly and played in the upper octaves of the Moog. I think Sylenth may have some presets to use as starting points.
Amp envelope: attack about 2-2.5 organ style decay release and sustain cutoff about 80 percent. Resonance is none. For the arp it's just 2 square waves octaved with a short amp sustain and instant attack. Also, add a bit of delay to the arp.

Many paid and free VSTs as well as Kontakt libraries. As well as HW synths/drum machine and acoustic instruments.

I figured he was talking about the background chords. The lead string-y patch in the solo sounds very much like the patch in the 2cd verse and chorus, just an octave higher, but thanks for the advice!

I've done some research: This song was recorded in 1972 and (likely) on a Moog Modular. As near as I can tell, Moog didn't offer an arpeggiator on any of their synths until the introduction of the Memory Moog in 1981. In fact, Roland's Jupiter was one of the first synths to feature an arpeggiator (1981). Apparently step sequencers were available for the Moog Modular, but I can't seem to find a date. So maybe my approach to using the arpeggiator is all wrong and I should be trying to recreate the sound with a step sequencer (either on-board or in my DAW)? I'm primarily a bassist so this stuff is pretty challenging to me by default haha.
