wagtunes wrote:Look guys, here's Peter's own words that he himself has posted here several times.
This is a collection of classic and iconic synthesizer sounds with a carefully-crafted easy-to-use interface. It is not intended for someone who wants to create infinite synthesizer sounds from scratch. We have all the parameters in the world that we could expose if we wanted to, but it would make the interface a lot more difficult to use and generally undesirable for most people. We have chosen the provide the most popular controls so users can edit our sounds quickly and easily. But (again) this is not the product for someone that wants a total control synthesizer with a mod matrix, etc.
Take this to mean whatever you want it to mean. I take it simply as, if I am looking for a traditional synthesizer in every sense of the word, I am NOT going to be happy with this product because it is going to be limited as far as what I can do with it. Those are Peter's very own words, not mine.

Now, if I'm looking for a product based solely on sound, then there is no question this is a quality product. I liked what I heard.

But I want to be able to do what I can do with Synthmaster One where I can take a simple sine wave and make it sound nothing like a sine wave. I can't do that with this product. I can maybe filter that sine wave and maybe do a few other simple things, but it's still going to sound like a sine wave. If I want a different sounding wave, I'll need to load a different sounding wave.

That's all I'm saying. That's all anybody here is saying who is calling this something other than a full featured synthesizer. That's why they're using the term rompler. It's not meant as a derogatory statement. It's just a more accurate one than lumping this thing in with every other synth where I can make a sine wave sound like Swiss cheese.

If you can't understand that then I don't know what else I can say to make you understand that.

Again, read Peter's own words above.
Exactly. This post alone summarizes everything in this thread so let's leave it at that. I myself don't need to be able to make "swiss cheese". I just want to be served a nice cheese platter to go with all the wine I have :hihi:

All I want now is some nice walkthroughs until release.

No, it really doesn't summarize everything in this thread. I honestly don't understand why so many people get offended when you start talking about a product from a technical standpoint. That serves a purpose, it's clearly served a purpose in this thread by clearing up exactly what this product is for some readers. Peter's words alone have NOT done that in the least.

This is absolutely a risk that you take when you pre-sell a product. People can't demo it yet and you only have the manufacturer's word to go on. So yes, you are going to look at it, look at the materials, criticize the copy, try to extrapolate what's really going on under the hood.

As we learn more about this product some of us will continue to talk about it from a technical standpoint. Choosing to get offended by that is completely on you. This is a discussion site about plugins. Whoah! Mind blown! Some people actually come here to DISCUSS PLUGINS, who'd have thought that could a thing?

I'm going to be money that someone else, not me, will resurrect this "it's not a rompler" line of reasoning a few pages from now and will repeat the same empty arguments and misconceptions about what people mean. Then someone else will say "let's just drop it guys" as if they were actually contributing anything to this thread in the first place.

Well to be honest, you're not contributing anything new to this thread either because you've said this same thing at least a half dozen times.

I'm choosing to now move on until we have an actual product to demo to see what it can and can't do.

Until then, all that can be said has already been said and we're just going around in circles.

So this is my final contribution to this thread until I have an instrument that I can get my hands on and demo, even if I've already made up my mind not to get it.

30 pages and the product is not even out yet.

...and thus, the cycle of life continues on the Serengeti.

I'll go back to something I said earlier, which I think it the source of a lot of the contention in this thread:

DO A WALK-THROUGH VIDEO.

Not a hard thing. I even offered to take it on. (Not for a free copy, I already bought it.) It would go a very long way toward illuminating exactly what this plugin is. But, bereft of information, the vacuum gets filled with hearsay and speculation. People start thinking, "Oh, they're hiding something." All we have is slick, hyper-produced, tracks and marketing videos. Instead of doing the walk-through, we get a v2 marketing video.

Anyway, I've already shelled out my cash, so it's no big thing to me. It does make me scratch my head though. I get that a product like this can't really do a demo version. Look at how Spectrasonics gets around that. There's Eric, smiling and jovial, up in front of a bunch of people, excitedly going though features. If IK wants to stop the cycle of speculation, they can. It just doesn't seem like they care to.

But they don't have any pre-order. You could wait till release date and buy it then, it wouldn't be any difference to Spectrasonics then. IKM only deliver an option and Persing not so it's a bit unfair to take them as example.

I think it's sometimes in JULY. Generally I don't pre-order stuff, unless I know for sure what I'm getting but I did for this one. The price wasn't so bad either... .

I think the main basis of a tool's usefulness is how quickly you can get a sound out of it that fits well in a song and conveys the emotion you need for the track. Based on that, we don't know yet. I think the pre-sell business model is predatory, and don't agree with that. I also don't agree with calling something 'Legendary' when it hasn't proven any market dominance yet, and isn't even available to demo. All that said, you vote with your wallet, and with my jam points and cross grade discount, combined with what IK did with Modo, this was a no brainer for me. Hopefully it lives up to it's hefty self proclaimed grandeur! :phones:

Syntronik is a powerhouse comprised of 17 instruments derived from 38 synths which are known to be pretty legendary. That's the meaning behind that tagline.

Thanks for the kind words about MODO BASS and for your preorder.

Can anybody who has pre-ordered tell me if your Credit Card was charged immediately or do they wait until the product is shipped. Just curious.

Not a bad idea, but, in the big scheme of things, we really do know what this product is. It's really a bit of wishful thinking to believe otherwise. Take a look at the SY-99 panel and explain how that's capturing any aspects whatsoever of the SY-99 from a synthesis perspective?

The ONLY way that you are going to capture anything that's special about the SY-99 with a modeled filter and some envelopes is by providing complex samples of the instrument. Same thing with the PPG, the ARP Solina and the PolyMoog. NONE of these instruments are a basic subtractive architecture and it is NOT the filter, per se, (or drift) that defines their character. With the SY it's largely FM+PCM, the PPG is a all about wavetables, the Solina is about early string synth methods, the PolyMoog is all about that resonator. These synths MUST be complex samples that are then modified by the rompler engine.

Even some of the synths that are really purely subtractive, their essence is not captured by this basic architecture. The TB303, the ARP 2600, and the A6 are complex in ways that you simply will not capture with this simple synth architecture.

I'm not saying that it won't be an awesome collection of samples from those synths, but, yes, that's what it is and you don't need a walkthrough to confirm that.

The only connection this has to an SY-99 is that it's using the color scheme and visual style of the SY-99. Even if you neglected FM you aren't going to get anywhere close to the SY-99's capability as a rompler with this synth engine as the SY has multistage envelopes.

Image

Similarly, a key component of the JX-10/JX8p is that the envelope modulation is bipolar, can modulate pitch and have multiple choices for destinations. Here's the DCOX front panel, which again, just looks like a JX-10/JX8P but has the exact same controls as the SY99.

Image

Here's a picture of the PG-800 which is pretty much everything regarding the basic synth architecture. You have cross mod, modulation of pitch from either envelope with independent depth controls, independent level control of both oscillators. Bipolar modulation of all destinations with the envelopes. Optional gate only control of the VCA freeing up the EGs for other uses.

This is a dead simple synthesizer and one that a decent rompler implementation could do a good job of capturing, crossmod would be a challenge. Since it's DCO based it has some similar limitations to romplers and the filter is pretty sterile. But what you're getting is the very same set of controls that are there for the other front panels.

Ok thanks. I'll wait for an actual release date.

Still, 30 pages later, and I still see no confirmation of how you select a source. Is it embedded in the patch? Who knows - there's no sign of it in the front panels I'll confess, but maybe it's under a menu somewhere. A walkthough would, in fact, clear that up.
