Ooh, about monitors!

Nothing unusual there.
I've experienced similar things but with different speakers. For example Dynaudio BM6As are complete devoid of the usual nearfield "boxed up" sound. and tend to be easier to mix with.
When ever I bring mixes I've done in other studios I tend to have most trouble exactly in this 200-400 Hz range.
Room can certainly have its influence on this, but in your case I would look elsewhere. Unless your speakers are a long way off the back walls of the studio - that would be a nesting ground for low mid problems.

Having spekers too big for the room can do this. Get a set of smaller ones as well.

I can't really say anything about your room set up. Move the monitors around and see if that has any effect. But that 300 Hz might have a lot to do with the walls and shape of your room. See, even if you have good isolation there, and damping, it's most likely that it doesn't work in this most problematic 300hz range. Diffusers help, but they are very expensive to have custom made which might be the only choise in this case. Or just resort to playing them really quiet. Room has less effect in very quiet volumes.EJo wrote:Can you explain the "boxed up" sound? The genelecs are in a sound isolated room with very effective damping on the walls. It that why they're not sensitive to the 300hz region, while the QLN which are in a large room with windows etc reveal the excess midrange around 300hz? Does the echo in the room create extra BOOOM?
But what do I mean about the boxed up sound?
well, since you are using genelecs this might apply especially to your setup.

I can't explain it any better.
