i wonder how he made the snare that catchy as well..

Hi,

I'm not too sure of what drum machine Vince Clarke used, however, the LM-1 was pretty popular in the mid-80s. While you may not be able to get exactly the same sound (not sure if it's the same drum machine he used), you should be able to get pretty close with some reverb and heavy compression.

I believe there were a variety of drum machines and sounds used - some from machines, some from synths. I swear I can hear an 808 snappy snare on a few songs and a punchy Linn snare on others. Clarke also used a Fairlight CMI with Yazoo so it's possible some sounds came from that. This pic shows him posing with an 808. And someone once did an impressive recreation of "Don't Go" (drums included) using only an SCI Pro-1.

I think the main key is to use a sound that is punchy (808 or Linn) and make it BOLD. The snares on some Yazoo songs are very up front and cut through everything. Appropriate EQ and compression should help with this.

wasn't "only you" made entirely with a pro-one?? exponential amp envelope, white noise, lpf.. any s/w drumbox should work.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

ah yes, i know about the speak'n spell and upstairs at eric's drums, that was kpr-55/808 and a ARP 2600 for the bassdrums.

i have linndrum as well as a LM-1 sitting here, and trying to get that special snare from the second yazoo album. i have tried many different kind of settings with both eq and compressor. but i am not really there!
it would help a LOT if i could find out exactly wich snare drum he used.

thanks for all the suggestions tho. :)

I seem to recall reading an interview where Vince said that all or most of the drums in those days were created by synths, not drum machines. I know there was a lot of pro-one drum sounds, can't particularly remember what else.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
