On the other hand, if you need that power but already have a screen you're satisfied with -- or don't need 5k in the first place :) -- you can get significantly better spec for a lot less money.
In which case you'd probably be a PC or Mac Pro user and not in the market for an iMac anyway. Otherwise that's a very valid point.

Apparently they have stated that the Mac Pro will be 'taken back to it's roots' in 2018. I don't know what that means or whether they'll u-turn back to a PCIe compatible chassis (they really should), but trashcan sales have been 90% lower than expected according to one friend of mine (relatively credible Hollywood mix engineer).

Here's a pretty fair article...

Favourite quote:
I personally am turned off by the prospect of a super-expensive system that I can never upgrade.

$1500 of that $5K goes towards the monitor.

Give me the same specs in a trashcan/Mac Pro without the monitor at $3500 and I'd bite.

I can understand the mindset of Apple with it's focus on design and miniaturization. Cramming it all inside the monitor case follows that focus.
There will certainly be a market for this...just as there was when they changed the pocket calculator into the iPhone.

Hope so - I need something with the power but don't need another monitor

Never had that issue, whether with my Mac Pro 2009 nor iMac 2012.
Especially the mac laptops try to take off from table. Maybe we use so much cpu (we do..).

As a developer, was hoping for an updated cheepo mini. Instead, we got this overpriced piece of glass. :dog:

Is there an official announcement for the 5000$ or it's just speculation ?

What's next, a MacBook-pro PRO?

FCC requires the device fall within a standard, below which radio frequencies radiate from it's chassis. (I'm pretty sure Apple's engineers got that together...but they still need approval before it's legal to sell.

Same here. A MacMini with a quad-core CPU and any type of display connector that will do 4K resolution at 60 Hz for a change... I'm getting pretty tired of waiting for my cursor to catch up with my eyes.
Confucamus.

exactly - go spec up a HP z840 and suddenly you'll think apple kit is cheap....

Will not buy it.

Because of lack of serviceability and the tiny package for too much heat. They're elegant as hell, unless something goes wrong.

Waiting for the future Mac Pro and separate Retina display. Still.

What if you want to place the computer in a different room for reducing noise, as most professional studios do? What if after 2 years you need a better graphics card? What if in 2 years we get 8K monitors and you want to change it? There are so many "what if's" that Apple didn't want to think of. I don't consider this to be for professionals, no matter if it has Pro in it's name. Pro means giving you the ability to upgrade your system, change/add storage drives/ram/graphics card.

PS. I'm sure it will get pretty hot and loud, as usual. In that small space you can't cool it enough.

Then, for you, as a customer, it means that the recently announced modular Mac Pro will be the better choice.

Here's a link (video) to John Gruber's WWDC 2017 interview with Craig Federighi and Phil Schiller. They talk at length about the pro market, and mention that the largest percentage of pro users use MacBook Pros, the next smaller percentage iMacs, and the smallest number Mac Pros (in the low single digit percentage of all Macs sold).

So there's a market for all kinds of different machines, for different kinds of professional use.
