Three questions - I have Emulator X3 which now seems to be stable in Cubase 9 after being flaky in previous versions of Cubase...Emulator X3 actually samples - however I'm wondering if there is any advantage of getting it to sample over simply importing audio from Cubase?
I'll be largely using it for hardware synth samples - the audio path would be line out synth to mixing desk, mixing desk to Focusrite audio card, and then into the PC. So either way the first part of the audio chain will be the same.
Second question - I have a query to Digital Audio Samples where I bought the X3 from but maybe someone here knows. When I fire up X3 as a standalone it says "Audio system could not be initialised". I have the preferences within X3 set to use the Focusrite USB 2.0 driver and I am not running any other programmes like Cubase. Any ideas?
Are there any other programmes (other than DAWs) that actually sample? I think Halion 6 does - anything else? I did think Tal-Sampler did but it seems not.

As far as I know, there shouldn't be any difference in audio quality between sampling using a software sampler and recording that same audio in your DAW and importing that into your sampler. I highly doubt the sampler itself will have some sort of different processing that will change the sound. I could be wrong of course and have never used Emulator X3, but generally speaking, digital audio is digital audio and as long as the signal path up to the capture point is the same, there should be no real difference. I suppose it's possible that there is some sort of input dithering or something else like that on the sampler but I kinda doubt it. I would just sample some different audio and record the same thing in your DAW and see if you can actually hear a difference.
The second question I can't answer because, as I said, I haven't used this program.
As to the third, a search turns up that Maschine, Geist, Morgana and possibly Tx16wx (which is free). Morgana looks interesting actually -

I'm not sure about Geist - the videos indicate it has a utility that sends audio from your DAW into it - rather than it directly sampling. Morgana I can't work out if it samples or not, by Tx16wx do you mean Cyclone? I already have that but didn't think it actually sampled or not.

According to what I can find, Morgana does sample, but haven't used it myself so I can't comment on what its capabilities are. If you really want to know, best bet is to download the manual (assuming there is one, and there almost always is).

Ableton is an example of a DAW that will not let you do this (it LOOKS like it will let you - you can set the output of an audio track to be the input of Tx16wx - but no audio will actually come into the plugin). Apparently it works fine in Reaper.
