just curious, how many people have listed only artists they like? (I did, but also said every artist and every song) I am strongly influenced by artists I dislike as well...
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Yeah - you can hear the Spice Girls and Britney Spears in every song I write. :P

Seriously - you got me there.
Why would you want to compose in a style you personally don't like? :?
Genuinely curious cos this is a new one on me...

ok, most of you must have guessed by now anyway, i am indeed the one that made all Madonna's hits, and everything by Metallica, RHCP, Milli Vanilli and Britney to name but a few, and i'm heavily influenced by Sonic Love.

mostly influenced musically by:

summerbirds in the cellar
mogwai
my bloody valentine (who I DO NOT like)
christie front drive
broken hearts are blue
slowdive
tortoise
pedro the lion
radiohead

Anytime I listen to the following music, I can easily write a song in a few minutes...

bjork
portishead
ilya (song Ill be posting in a few days is from listening to 8 hours of ilya)

And for some reason, extremely influenced by metal. I cant stand most of it these days, but even if I hear a shitty metal song (or work with a shitty metal band), lights in my head start going off. It's built in to me I guess.

I listed a few that I liked intensely at the time, but now have been replaced by other favorites.

I don't think I'm influenced by artists I don't like: I generally like a band because they *do* have aspects that I can incorporate into my own work! :) Can't really think of a technique that I've borrowed that can from an artist I actively dislike, and I'm not a contrarian such that I'll avoid their techniques either.

I didn't say I wanted to compose a style I don't like, I said I was influenced by artists I didn't like. That was my whole entire point, not all influences are positive. Tell me you haven't scrapped a project that sounded too much like a band you dislike. Bands and artists we dislike also influence us, it has to be. IMO you can't have one without the other... :D

I can confidently said a little bit of mbv has made it's way into all my music. And I hate mbv to death... but I still listen to them because I feel like Id not be myself without their style somewhere in my head.

but you are influenced by bands you don't like, you don't want to sound like them if you don't like them, right?...that's an influence...
