Very nice. I have been away from music quite a while, but played a lot of all those valuable synthedit-vstis, and reading about your favourites will surely be a nice thing, also to refresh memory :).

I'm not gonna even discuss this topic until OP says which VSTi's he has downloaded and which VSTi's he thinks that suck. I'm quite sure he was googling already and downloading VSTi's mentioned in some "the best freeware synths" lists.
I mean, if he downloaded Synth1 and just went browsing through default presets of course he'll think that Synth1 sucks because its default presets don't show even 5% of what Synth1 is capable of and what kind of sounds it can actually produce.

Similar thing can be said for many free VSTi's that have questionable quality of default presets or have small amount of them which doesn't show VSTi's true capabilities.

Variety Of Sound are the best VST effects ever. Unfortunately I'm not sure whether they will ever be ported to 64 bit / cross platform. https://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/

I feel like Crystal no longer gets the love it deserves. Just used it on a track for the first time in a while and I think it holds up very nicely, even with contemporary commercial synths.

I use Synth1, Dexed, Oatmeal and Firebird (and Aalto CM but that's magware). They may not be the best but now I've learned how to use them they work well for me.

Charlatan always seems to be recommended so I keep trying it but for some reason I can't persuade it do anything that I can't get easier from one of the others.

It depends on the sound that you want, there is no way to clarify your ears. If you are looking for popular free synths, they are plastered across the internet. Charlatan is a good recommendation, it's simple to connect with as it has good qualities, that's the perfect starting point. Get to know just one first. This is also the key to solving creative blocks is reasonable limitation and patience. Start with one synth first, connect with it. There are too many options to make a clear choice, so you need to start with one. If you can't make a decent one sound good, a better one won't help either. Cheers.

Most have been mentioned but NI have some great freebies in Reaktor Player and Blocks wired. That's high quality stuff.

And while magware do require a magazine purchase, the CM collection should be mentioned because of BazilleCM, which could easily have been payware if it's big brother didn't exist, and DuneCM (same as the LE beat version), AltoCM, and ZebraCM.
