If Roland made a D50 vst emulation, would you purchase it?

Ok, I've now got a working tool that will convert D50 sysex banks into the *.bin bank format for the plugin.
I'll convert all the http://cultofd50.org D50 patches into banks for the plugin, and sort out a bulk download, so you'll have all the D50 patches you can handle...!

This was already discussed in this thread earlier, so you probably haven't been reading before posting!Halonmusic wrote:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5qeJaXMNvM8

Converting them now - there's a lot of them!Ingonator wrote:Wow, this would be indeed great.
I posted elsewhere I wonder who the first person would be to convert the JM Jarre bank for the plugin - turns out it was me!
Should be done and up in about half an hour...
(If there's demand for more patches after this lot (!), then I might put up the conversion tool on the web - upload your syx file, download the converted bin file, but let's get this initial conversion done first and see where it goes from there...)

Ok, the download is here:
[link temporarily removed, to fix a couple of minor issues, the new link will be posted shortly]
This is all the http://cultofd50.org/ patches with syx files converted to bin files for the plugin (672 banks in total, though there are duplicates).
Load the bank files you want to use in the D50's Patch window, using the "Load" button.
Any problems, give me a shout - I obviously haven't gone through all of these or sorted them out in any way.
Enjoy!

First tested with a single bank and you indeed need to use the "LAd" button. Just to copy the bank file to the coresponding folder (wheer i also saved a user bank) does not seem to work.
The bank i tested seem to load in the plugin. Will check that and others ASAP...

Yeah, I did some factory banks to work out the formats and verify I was getting bit identical results, then tried a random bunch of other banks to make sure everything seemed good. Some fun stuff in there!Ingonator wrote:The bank i tested seem to load in the plugin. Will check that and others ASAP...
In actual fact, there wasn't much conversion required, as the plugin still stores all data in the same mapping as the hardware, apart from the names which are encoded in ASCII in the plugin, but have a different encoding in the sysex spec.
The biggest issue was figuring out the sysex stuff, as a bank dump consists of 112 sysex blocks for 64 patches - it turns out the D50 doesn't support single patch dumps, it always dumps a bank, and basically it takes the big block of bank data, then splits it up into 256 byte chunks, and sends those out via 112 sysex messages.
So the importer simply reads in the sysex to compile an internal representation of the data (stripping the sysex headers and checksums etc), converts the names from the D50 sysex encoding to ASCII, then outputs the bank header and the data (had to do some chunk reordering too) but the core structures and data remain the same and don't need any special conversion, which made it a lot easier.

The first of your converted banks i loaded was one of the "Jarrelook" ones (bank called "MJF19 D50.bin"). I really like the patch #A-8 called "Star Peace Chorus" there.
Te pathc uses 4 PCMS so no filter is involved and a big part of the soudn also coomes from the built-in FXs.
Another "trick" there is that it uses Output mode 2 where each of the 2 Tones (Lower/Upper Tone) is hard panned to one stereo channel which is also how the original D-50 factory presets called "Stereo Polysynth" is done.

What a load of crap. I hope they crash and burn. Software as a "service" has to stop. There's nothing good "economically" in this shit unless you're the one taking the monthly fees.Ingonator wrote:This was an official answer from Roland Virtual Sonics (the company behind Roland Cloud) at Facebook 3 days ago concernig single purchases:
FWIW at their Facebook page there are alraedy several requests for having seperate purchases. I mentioned it too there today, at least for the D-50.Roland Cloud Dear Axel, the reason we don't offer single sales is that we are a service and not a store. The reasons for this will become more apparent as one uses the service. We suggest you give it a try. And if cloud computing is not for you, consider a purchase of our range of hardware synthesizers. We offer something for everyone and every style of creativity.
But with Roland Cloud, the future is in connectivity because at the operating system level, computers are now designed to be connected. Roland is embracing this connectivity even as we pioneered MIDI.
The capabilities we offer (and plan to offer) go beyond the paradigm of a single computer. Cloud processing and services is what we feel is the bright solution for all of us in music.
Specifically, the capabilities we offer now for just $19.95 per month compete with thousands of dollars in outright purchases. We also support our software 24/7 and we are adding value with each new product that is included in the base membership. Of course, some of our customers have the means to buy tens of thousands of dollars in hardware and software, but we believe in the accessibility and the low cost economic model of shared computing. Cloud means that more people will be able to make and participate in music at a professional level. We think that is a great thing. At Roland, we design the future.

FWIW there does not seem to be an official reply concerning D-50 Sysex support yet.
