Native Instruments.
Love me some NI, but dat name tho. What about a Balinese Gamelan is native to Germany? What about a grand piano is "native" as in indigenous? Or is native about non-hardware? Then what about the FX? Or the control surfaces?
So confusing.
Because, you know, Pee Enn Jee would mean Portable Network Jraphics... Just sayin'
I totally agree with you, though. It's GIF as in gaffa tape. Not JIF as in jaffa cake.

So do you pronounce PNG with a soft G at the end? Pee Enn Ghee?chaosWyrM wrote:ugh...im guessing its the same people who pronounce gif as jif.

It's a relic of when 'native' plugins (ie plugins that run on the hosts operating system and CPU) were the big new thing as compared to DSP powered ones and NI were pioneers of such plugins.Rockatansky wrote:Native Instruments.

In the late 90's I guess that was a holy grail for computing. At the time it also took a couple of hours to make a mp3 from a WAV file

Not plugins, but:
2hp: if I say I have a 2hp module, I could mean that it's 2 hp (horizontal pitch, 2x 5.08mm in Eurorack format) wide. Or I could mean I have a module from 2hp, the company, all of which are 2hp modules.
All 2hp modules are 2hp, but not all 2hp modules are by 2hp.
And then there's CGS, which stands for "Cat Girl Synth". Started by a guy who, when the internet was new, posted hundreds of pictures and stories about Japanese catgirls... but also turned out to be a pretty good engineer.

I figured I was the only one who thinks this! Up until recently I've avoided Softube plugs simply because of the idiotic Gobbler license manager!
