Never heard of Slapp Happy or Snakefinger and I've only got one Residents album - Eskimo but never listen to it.

Yeah - you can hear the Spice Girls and Britney Spears in every song I write. :P

Seriously - you got me there.
Why would you want to compose in a style you personally don't like? :?
Genuinely curious cos this is a new one on me...
I didn't say I wanted to compose a style I don't like, I said I was influenced by artists I didn't like. That was my whole entire point, not all influences are positive. Tell me you haven't scrapped a project that sounded too much like a band you dislike. Bands and artists we dislike also influence us, it has to be. IMO you can't have one without the other... :D
Ah, now I see where you're coming from. :D
Thanks. 8)

In which case, to answer your question; no, I don't think I'm influenced by people I don't like. :D
I've scrapped projects, sure (sometimes you have to let a tune go) but usually cos it's crap in the first place and I can't take it anywhere. :)

Snakefinger was often the guitar you'd hear on many Residents albums. :D
His solo albums (which I don't have any more since they were pinched) are awesome. Snakefinger; most apt name... 8)

I wouldn't know where to start to recommend a good Residents album, they're all pretty obscure and brilliant. Definitely not everybody's cup of tea though. :)

of course you are, how can you know what you like unless you define what you don't like as well?
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Henry Cow were brilliant. As for Residents - I did listen to a few things by them but maybe not enough. I bought Eskimo because I liked the last track but got bored with it. What I've heard of their's sounded clever but failed to make any real emotional contact with me - seemed a rather dry exercise in cleverness for it's own sake. But I'm open to suggestions if someone want's to prove me wrong.
