If Roland made a D50 vst emulation, would you purchase it?

Yes, as long as it was reasonably priced.

When you have a bank on the desktop and want it in the plug-in.. you can press "load" in the patch-window and go to desktop and load it.. --> The plug-in saves this bank in the patch-folder.. so it shows up in the patch browser of the vst.
If i create a new bank or import one with the LOAD button in the D-50 (at Windows 10 64-bit) the new bank is found at:
C:\ProgramData\Roland Cloud\D-50

The other sub-folder in the VSTplugins folder mentioned above only seems to include the factory banks but those are found at the folder i just mentioned too.

Anyway if i just copy a BIN file to the folder i just mentioned it will not appear in the plugin but i have to use the LOAD button in the bank browser of the plugin. The teh bank will also appear in the banks drop-down list at the browser.

Close & remove the plugin, copy the bank, then load the plugin again - does it show up now?

Checked that yesterday also with re-starting the host. Only banks that were imported with the LOAD button in the plugin browser seem to appear in the banks drop-down list in the plugin.

Actually a bank file that was copied to that folder without the LOAD feature seemed to be automatically removed when restarting the host (and maybe als when re-starting the plugin).

The folder that was mentioned above (by anoteh rmember) which is located at the plugin folder only seems to contain the factory banks which seem to be available in the user banks folder at the different location too.

One thing i noticed after re-starting the plugin is that the banks in the drop-down list in the plugin are alphabetically sorted while usually new banks are first added to the end of the list.

As mentioned earlier also in Windows it is possible to impoort multiple banks at once with the LOAD feature in the plugin.

I've said before that I felt that Alchemy reminded me a lot of the D50, and playing with the D50 plugin that belief is quite reinforced - I think Alchemy can do a passable D50 impression and is probably the most D50-like plugin around, particularly if you stick to D50 features like simple VA and short PCM sample combinations (and drench them with FX, like a lot of the D50 stuff is...)

Hey beely - thanks for the banks and conversion tool - nice one !

When you say "Alchemy reminded me a lot of the D50" do you not mean Anthology 87 ?

If not what is Alchemy ? is it the old banned by roland Kontakt bank ?

In teh pats it was called Camel Audio Alchemy that was bought by Apple a while ago and since then (as an updated version) included with Apple Logic X. A dedicated Windows version is no longer available.

That "banned" Kontakt bank was LA-50 which i bought before it was discontinued. Anyway with the same patches i prefer the sound of the new D-50 plugin by Roland.
The majority of patches in LA-50 were new patches and it did not inlcude all of the 64 D-50 factory patches (maybe around 66% of them).

"Anthology 1987" is a sample library also available at Roland Cloud based on the original 64 factory presets.
Compard to taht i prefer both the dedicated D-50 plugin and also LA-50.

Oh ok, I get you now. I'm sitting next to my real D-50 thinking - Shall I sell it or not now !!

Nobody could really help you with that decison. Depends just on what you need yourself.

FWIW I had owned a D-50 back in 2004 which is simply too long ago to really remember differences found compared to the the plugin. Anyway the D-50 plugin indeed reminds me of those sounds from that time when i owned the real thing.

Programming your own patches seems to be more simple with th plugin for sure.
Besides that the plugin also includes the 28 additional PCM samples that were added with the VC-1 D-50 expansion for V-Synth and that were not included in the original D-50. The 6 factory banks of the VC-1 expansion are included in the plugin too.

Now that KVR member Beely offered conversion of original Sysex banks for the plugin (both a lot of converted banks and a website for doing conversions yourself) even the currently missing Sysex import in the plugin is no longer a big problem for me.

Sound wise the hardawr eD-50 and tzhe plugin are maybe not fully identical but if you got the plugin and teh harware D-50 you could comapre it yourself and decide if teh difference matters for you or not.

The main remaining problem with the D-50 plugin might be the subscription payment model...

Yep, Camel's/Apple's Alchemy...

I have a real Wavestation and the software one. To be honest, if you have a real D50, it's cheaper than the Roland plugin (which you have to pay for monthly regardless of whether you use it or not) and while the plugin is convenient and less noisy, it's not like you get significant advantages over the real thing like increased polyphony etc.

So unless you want to make music featuring loads of D50 tracks at once, or need the space, stick to the hardware! :tu:

Looks like some folks have tried to convert syx files containing only one patch, which I don't really support yet (banks only).

I've hardened up the convertor to reject non-bank files for now and I'll look to adding support for individual patches or partial patches later on. I didn't really expect people to convert single patches into plugin banks but hey, put something on the internet, and expect the unexpected...! ;)

These sounds was created with Alchemy (Windows version)
First patch no samples like in the D50, next patches with D50 attack/looped raw samples, and the last patch, as i remember a sample from Korg M1.
These are not sampled patches from Roland D50, but programmed from scratch in Alchemy with the combination of Alchemy's synth and sample section, exactly like in Roland D50.

Ingonator & beely - Thanks for your words

The D-50 needs a bit of maintainance - the keyboard is very tempremental and often needs a good clean which iis a pain opening it up etc.
So I will have a good old think about it ;)

ps. olepro - nice sounds and chords !

can anyone reproduce in other DAWs when rendering in mp3 (i didnt test other formats yet) with only d50 plugin that it gets sloppy sounding?
