90% of the time when Im producing electronic music, Its between 11PM and 5PM.. When everybody in my house (even brothers in the same room) are sleeping.
I do have a pair of JBL 305 monitors I can use, but obviously not at the time Im producing.. I have to use my headphones, which has its benefits. When making music on headphones, everything around me is blocked out entirely so I can focus on my music real easily and get things done, come up with ideas without feeling insecure with everyone else hearing it. Basically I can get crap done and have a really great Idea put down. Although!! here is the problem...
Ive noticed that about 3 different tracks I made recently like this, they sound great on the headphones, I move onto a new song. Coming back to one of those 3 songs, the mix sounds god awful on the JBL 305 monitors.. So im like okay what the hell. Just did some reading and I can understand why this is happening, but I need some advice really.
How should I go about mixing on my headphones? For electronic music / getting the idea down etc.. Requires me to do some sound designing, Eqing etc... Like I said, on headphones... Which seems to be misleading in alot of cases.. Not all the time from what Ive noticed but most of the time for sure.. Which would take a whoooollee lot of extra work on re configuring the sound, taking effects off of percussion sounds and what not.
Like I said though!! NOT IN ALL CASES this happens, which I find weird.. In these new circumstances listed above I have been able to finish 5 tracks. Which is freaking amazing thanks to using headphones allowing me to keep focus and just experiment without any worry in the world of who else is hearing what Im making. Causing the end result to be a great idea of my own. But ive noticed like I said, on monitors some mixes are straight garbage.
Anyways, any helpful advice on how I can make sure my mixes are solid while having to work on headphones for the majority of my production time?.. The only times I can produce on the monitors are over the weekends. And id like to not have to sit down and have a freaking crazy long mixing session basically making the track a 2nd time.
Thanks!!
Need Some Advice!!

If you have a few professional tracks to compare your music to (that sound good on your monitors and your headphones) they will keep your ears reminded of what good sound is, as you work on your own tracks etc.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

There are a million advices out there and you should try different things to find out what works best for you. One thing is for sure, and that is you need to get to know your headphones and monitors. The best way to do that is as Aloysios said, by listening to good tracks in your head phones. Monitors and pro headphones are not made to sound good. They are made to tell you the truth about what you are listening to.
I use my monitors and headphones to listen to the gain staging in the mix and also listening to find frequencies and things that sound wrong. Just a few days ago I bought AKG K701 and since before I have a pair of AKG K99. Besides from that I have a pair of monitors (M-Audio BX8) and also a pair of cheap USB headphones. I listen to my track in all of these in order to judge how it really sounds.
