If Roland made a D50 vst emulation, would you purchase it?

Yes, as long as it was reasonably priced.

"Fmidi_2" from the CultofD50 archive contains at least a couple of patches which crash the plugin for me, I don't know why - the sysex data for those patches looks a little suspicious from a cursory glance but I don't yet know what the actual problem is - I'll investigate but it's not a priority for now.

Edit: And I just noticed some files in the archive in a lower folder level weren't converted for some reason, sorting that out now... :dog:

Ok, I've updated the archive file again, so re-download if you previously downloaded it - same link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/owdr8l3ulp0s3 ... n.zip?dl=1

Folders that didn't have BIN files were:
/Categorised/*
/D-50_AllTheWeb/*
/Valhala/*

I've added the BIN files to those folders within those.

Sorry for that!

You're welcome, glad to get this stuff accessible!

I'm currently converting all the patches to Logic .aupreset files (individual patches) which is how I prefer to handle plugin patches.

Taking a while, there are something like 40,000+ patches! :o

Yep, i mentioned that last week and it sis indeed very helpful for doing your own patches:
Ingonator wrote:While finally starting to do my own patches from scratch with the D-50 VST after reading the manual again i found another helpful tip there (previosuly i posted here about keyboard shortcuts in the bank/patch browser).

You could edit both "Tones" (Upper and Lower) by clicking on the first one like e.g. "Upper" to open the edit page and then while holding the SHIFT key at your computer keyboard clicking on the "Lower" Tone.
The Upper Tone should now be marked with red color and the Lower with green color. All changes in the Upper Tone edit page are now also used for the Lower one.

The same also works with the 4 Pertials. Click the first one that should be edited (the edit page is opened for that) and that keeps marked with red color, hold SHIFT and click on the other partials that should be selected/edited too which are then marked with green color. Again changes done to the first partial that was opened are also done with the others you have marked/selected.

I'm thinking that it would be easy to load my own transient samples into Falcon, layer with standard waveforms, slap on some reverb, and call it a day.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

And chorus. Don't forget the chorus. Or, in some cases, flanger :)

I got Falcon too. This might work for a few D-50 patches but not for all for sure.

Using differnt samples, a different filter and differnt effects might also not lead to a similar sound.
Just because the D-50 was digital does not mean that this is also easy to replicate. sound wise.

Besides that for certain patches you would also need ring modulation between layers (between partials in the D-50).

Anyway concerning Chorus i like the Thorus FX in Falcon and i also bought it as a separate plugin while my favorite plugin for Chorus are Valhalla ÜberMod (where you could also create your own custom Chorus) and ERS DimD (= Roland Dimension D). FWIW one of the Chorus modes in teh D-50 is called "Dimension".

For sure, Falcon won't get you a precise emulation of the D50 and the classic presets. But if you reject the D50 as sacred ground and instead embrace the concept of LA synthesis, I think Falcon can yield similar results.

I agree that Falcon might be one of the few softsynths which i own myself (BTW i got Falcon with the introduction price when it was released and also got Thorus as a seperate FX plugin) that might get somehow close to the synth engine of the D-50.
Other options i got here might be e.g. Avenger, Synthmaster 2.8 and Electra 2 (while this does not offer MSEGs like in the D-50).

I've had a request to convert the other way (from the plugin bank format back to sysex) so people can edit/organise with the plugin, and dump back to their hardware, so I'll look to adding that over the next few days...

Obviously some handling of patches that require the extra waveforms not present in the hardware will be necessary, even if it's just a warning and resetting those waves...

Great to see Roland finally release the D50 as an AU and VST plugin. Also, fantastic to see Beely come out with a sysex converter for the plugin. However, not so good that the D50 plugin is cloud monthly subscription only which is a pity because if the price was buy it now I would of bought this without hesitation. Anyway, I have tried the demo and I am impressed. It does really sound like the real D50. So 10 out of 10 for the D50 plugin but minus 10 out of 10 for the cloud monthly subscription and having to activate online every time. If the monthly subscription meant after a year I could keep this then I'd think about it.

That's what they say ("after one year, you get to keep a plugin of your choice"). They added this to sweeten the subscription deal...

Of course, that still means an online license check each time to load the plugin in your DAW, so you can't use it anytime your computer is offline... (although they say they are looking at alternative authorisation schemes to get around this...)
