I took a look at the published release notes and updates. It looks like the last update was in 2015. No thanks.

That was just a compatibility update for Mac OS, Iris only ever had one hotfix update long before, I'll skip the rest of the story as it has been told so many times.Gribs wrote:I took a look at the published release notes and updates. It looks like the last update was in 2015. No thanks.

it's worth $50 just for the .wav library that comes with it.jeffb01 wrote:So at $50, is Iris 2 a no-brainer or not?

Iris is just as good as it ever was.
It is extremely sad that it will not be further improved, there would be quite some more potential in the way you can select audio (soft selection like in Audition for instance) or have modulated regions and it would be great to be able to modulate sample start and end etc. and have more interesting ways to move through the sound overall, better filters, better effect routing etc. but even with the bugs, I still think it's a very worthwhile sounddesign tool for working with samples.
The whole "we do dubstep-wobbles too" is as silly as it gets though.
IMO the new modulation interface in v2 is much nicer to use than what version 1 offered, although it would need some bug fixing and improvements to really shine.
No idea why they dropped it to be honest, it's pretty unique still.
Check the demo to see if it works for you, the price is definitely good.
Cheers,
Tom

I suspect they realised they made a dumb mistake alienating everyone who bought any of the addon soundsets for version 1 by making it impossible to use them in version 2 (even though version 1 had been strongly marketed on the basis of those soundsets) - the new market they thought would be opened up by making what was really a sound designer's tool into something that could do dubstep wobbles never materialised (would have thunk it?) - and consequently their short sighted money counting backers lost interest.ThomasHelzle wrote: No idea why they dropped it to be honest, it's pretty unique still.

In the last email exchange I had with the Bradbot it was stated that any future of Iris was dependent on increased sales and that was why they were "reaching out" (I hate that phrase) to a new userbase. It should have been obvious that it would never appeal to that userbase.
I just wish they would sell it to somebody else who might wish to develop it further as it is too good a product to die.
And pigs might fly.

Let me reach out (I also hate that phrase) and offer blind hope to the Iris lovers.lnikj wrote:In the last email exchange I had with the Bradbot it was stated that any future of Iris was dependent on increased sales and that was why they were "reaching out" (I hate that phrase) to a new userbase. The two candidates for Iris type features are:
MashTactic

and
Kaleidoscope

edit:
Let me add
Cube http://www.virsyn.de/en/E_Products/E_CUBE/e_cube.html
Pigs butterfly or else.

I really like Iris 2, warts and all. There's really nothing else that works like it and I will continue to use it for as long as it continues to work.
If you do ambient, soundscape, anything abstract or experimental, it's a tool to have in your toolbox. As someone pointed out, the library alone has some value as it's decently diverse and high quality.
