Editing soundfonts. How do I do it?

I'd like to turn off the velocity layers in a lot of my soundfonts.

How would I go about editing them?
What software do I need (hopefully free or inexpensive :) ) and where can I get information about the editing proccess?

By the way, I don't use a soundblaster card so I can't use vienna. I don't think.

If you have VSampler or Soundfaction Alive you can do it. There are others too, e.g. extreme sample converter or chicken systems that saves sf2 formats. I would think most samplers today can do it.

Turning off velocity layers are not so simple by just changing a setting. You need an editor that can delete the extra wav files and then you'll need to re-map the remaining ones to the full velocity map. Fairly easy if you have an editor like VS.

PS - about some tutorials you can find that kind of info in any sampler manual. It really depends on the software you use. Most samplers allow you to do whatever they allow you to do and in the end just save as sf2.

Do a google for soundfont tutorials. At my web site I have a description of a very old and outdated soundfont exercise with Alive.

I'm using sfz for soundfonts and it doesn't have those features.

I'll take a look at the ones you mentioned.

Thanks.

If you're using sfz, just dump out the soundfont to wavs (search for sf2comp) and use sfz format. That way you don't have to mess with annoying user interfaces, just apply your favourite text mangling toolset.

(Okay, okay, sfz hasn't got DFD mode for sfz format yet. Or multiple intrument support. And sf2comp doesn't yet write sfz format files - the source is out there... But it's the principle that counts.)

I know this is an old topic, but it I can't find the answer to the same question? how can I edit a Soundfont without a soundfont compatible card?

soundfaction Alive does not work that way.

and coverting to sfz is not an option because i need to stay Linux compatible for working at my friend's...

I'm using Awave Studio from http://www.fmjsoft.com. Get the demo and try it out.

As I understand it, sfz runs quite happily under the vstserver on Linux. Can't remember the link right now. And Steve Holt has a SF2 to SFZ converter too. I'd guess that will run under WINE. If not, I'm sure Steve would consider fixing it.

You could also consider using TiMidity++ as in ALSA server mode. Once you've got the sfz mapping, converting to TiMidity++'s config file format shouldn't be too hard (although you'd probably lose some detail, IIRC). Bit of PERL and you're away.

I think I remember that TiMidity++ can use the individual programs out of a Soundfont file directly, too... Never tried it that way myself, though.

i'm kind of new to all this stuff. basically i'm just a guitar player that gave up looking for a real life drumer to replace the one that left the band ;)

so i was pretty much just looking for audio recording and mixing along with a drum machine... not really into perl scripting, or anything that involves too much of computer stuff

I'm using ns_kit.sf2 (brilliant layering) and I just want to change the snare for one I recorded at a studio (just because it is MY sound, even tough it doesn't sound that great...)

but ns_kit is 200Mb and I just can't find a way to edit it and audition it at the same time!

that's when I start hating the computer and (re)start my quest for the drummer guy.

PT you need Vienna Soundfont Studio. SF2s are a bit tricky to do but once you understood you can create great results.

Here is a nice soundfont tutorial by Analoguesque.com(they have great soundfonts)

Hope this helps ;)

He said he doesn't have a 'soundblaster card', so he can't use Vienna.

thanks.

i'm allready up to test AWave 9.1 and Livesynth Pro DXi 1.4 (somewhere else in this forum someone says this one can be used to audition soundfonts inside SoundFaction Alive which i already have. though they say that Livesynth is defunct I still managed to get a copy from a friend)

I promise I'll post my results here. Hope this will be helpfull for the next guy that crash-lands on this soundfont world and realizes, like me, "hum! what a nice idea... if only I could edit these things"

I can't use sfz format because I am on win98 and sfz stopped working propperly around version 100. I still use ver 0958. Later versions have serious stereo imaging problems.

Have you tried sfz since you last posted a bug report? (2004 Apr 23 14:41) It might be worth trying sfz193, as the sfz format work may have affected how it works. If it is still broken, I's suggest you try posting another bug report with the details René asked for. There do appear to be some subtle bugs that one or two people get -- without the test case details, it's likely to be impossible to fix.

Oddly enough, this problem started after I downloaded a banjo soundfont that sfz wouldn't play. I guess it's a banjo snob.

Rene fixed it so that the banjo would play and that was the version that started having the stereo imaging problems.

Some other people posted about the imaging problem and Rene said it was because he was optimizing sfz for wimdows XP and not win 98.
