Cubase SX

I'm using Cubase SX with a Nord Lead 3.
I want to do something that I see as trivial but for the life of me I can figure out.
I just what to automate some parameters for some of the VST's I've got loaded with my nord mod wheel. I've seen this feature in Reason
FOR INSTANCE: I've got and Atmosphere Synth open in Cubase and I'd like to automate the filter cutoff with my mod wheel. Sounds normal?
From what I've read, it should be as simple as clicking the "write" button and moving the mod wheel while playing your track. Once you stop playback, you should be able to click "Show Automation" and have all your little movements appear in an automation track.
This does now seem to be the case. The two things I really can't get to work are
1: Assign the parameter in ANY vst to my mod wheel.
2: Get the movements (mouse or non-mouse) to appear as automation.
I've followed the help file setting up a generic remote but this only helped in assigning Cubase parameters to keyboard controls, NOT vst.
Can anyone give me a hint where I'm going wrong?

That's not how it works in SX I'm afraid. Mapping CC MIDI signals (i.e. from your Mod wheel) to a VST parameter is dependant upon that functionality being implimented within the plugin itself. SX just passes the MIDI signals to the VST.
So it is entirely dependant upon the VST creator as to whether what you want to do is possible. I think Spectrasonics software is lacking in that ability.
The otherway to do it is to use the Midi Transformer within SX to map you CC signals to a signal accepted by Stylus. Look up Midi Transformer in the SX Manual.

You can do this, providing the VSTi parameter is visible to SX - easy enough to find out from the Track List.
What you must do is assign the VSTi parameter to the hardware control via the GRD (Generic Remote Device). (The GRD is still buggy despite it working perfectly in Nuendo 1, so you might have to fight with it a little.)
Once you've done that, you can alter the VSTi parameter in realtime, and, providing you have automation write on for that parameter, you can record the automation.

ok i stand happily corrected - does the remote control thingie allow em to have numerous saved set ups so that i can keep swapping depending on what vst i'm owrking with ?
and yes i could read the manual (p329 onwards) but it seems easier to ask someone who has done it and might know the bugs/pit-falls
