New from UVI: UVX80 (AKAI AX80 re-imagining)

The issue with single cycle waveform is that you lose the vibe of the original analog hardware with its imperfection
which give a less static sound hence the sample base approach as opposed to wavetable.

In any case, this is clearly not a 100% reproduction of the hardware and this wasn't our goal.
You still get the vibe of the orignal though.

You should model the AX80 filter though

Funnily enough, we have used the Xpander type filter from the UVI engine which is actually the same Curtis Electronics CEM 3372 used in the AX80

Of course this won't sound exactly like the original machine.

To answer my own post , no I have never played an original. I did a little bit of research and its a synth that wouldn't appeal to me at all however YMMV obviously and its only an opinion FFS

I am interested in it, but it is that kind of product I would think would be included in Digital Synsations vol 2

And with the backlog of products UVI is building up, I expect Vintage Vault 2 to ship in the not so distant future. So holding out for that.

It's an analog synth.

I won't hold my breath, because it is a pretty obscure synth, but a proper emulation would be a wonderful thing.

it sure would. when i was building my studio, i bought several analog synths including
a obie1000, roland mks50, and a yamaha AN1x hoping to be able to get the
tone of the bass in a song by kim mitchel from the 80's heard in the start
of this video:

i couldn't replicate it with any of them.
the bass sound is nothing huge or amazing, but it just sounds cool to me.
i later found out it was the Akai AX80 in the video with tape over the
name! i got lucky and pick one up almost new in the box from ebay.
it has been my favorite synth for 80's synth bass sounds since.

I always wondered if artists covered the brands on instruments because maybe they were endorsed by someone else or if just being petty. I believe the former to be the truth more times than not.

But yea...the 80 may not be as flexible or have a million routing options like today's synths, hardware or software, but it has a very distinct tone and the "big knob" control layout isn't a hindrance...it's actually one of the more enjoyable synths to program..

Have to sacrifice the 2nd oscillator to do PWM on the JX3P.

AX80 does PWM out the box.

Then you still have the 3 LFO's on the AX80 to contend with.

Of you don't mind touching on the subject a bit...how much of a process is modeling a filter as opposed to maybe an oscillator.

Some people say the 3372 is nothing special but I do know it can has variable pole switching. And there's some unique routing options, I think any of the poles outputs can be fed back into pole 1? Or something along those lines.

I've seen the chip in several synths and they sound extremely different..of course I'd imagine the circuit being the differentiating factor here.

Sounds like modeling it's various configurations would be a pretty involved process.

Fair point. I guess I just prefer the hands-on of a semi-analogue unit as opposed to a sample-based synth inside of UVI Workstation or Falcon. To each their own as they say.
