I used to subscribe to 4 of the US ones. They all suck to me ever since I found ComputerMusic. Subscription to the US is 60 bucks. Well worth it to just subscribe!
The two others that I look forward to every month ate TapeOp (bimonthly) and Sound On Sound.
The others are just ok...mostly reviews of stuff I don't care about and ads. Tape Op rules because it's loaded with interviews with people recording the DiY route. It's inspiring.
CM is loaded with tutorials and valuable techniques.
SoS is cool, because it's cool to have at least one mag that's all business. Yeah, it's a little dull compared with others, but it's very professional. They have good plugin reviews, too.

Ever since he's come out on the "real musicians only use hardware, VSTs are toys" side of things I have trouble respecting anything he writes anymore.I loved EM in their earlier days when Craig Anderton was editor...
I much prefer FM and CM -- altough I ordered a back issue of CM from their website something like 6 months ago and it never arrived. And my local bookstores are inconsistent about carrying them (I think they just get a severely limited number of copies each month and they sell out).

Stupid question from me; also on their website the 'CM Studio' is not listed as 'on the CD' while some parts of it are...Lunch Money wrote:Everyone who in interested in free plugins should buy Computer Music at least once. Every month, even if it's not "advertised" on the cover, the disc includes the "CM Studio" which is a bundle of software including some -excellent- free VST plugins, as well as the CMuzys sequencer which some seem to like.
Greg
For example the OMG plugin is not listed, will it be on the CD this month?

I have the September issue of CM (#77)--subjective opinion: this is a really good one to start with if you've never owned one. There are articles covering a pretty broad range of things: a large article on mixing, articles on comprssion, eq, automation. And there's a close look at Live 4 with a demo, if you're interested.

I'll second all of that! It's a particularly good - and useful - issue.SaviorNeeded wrote:I have the September issue of CM (#77)--subjective opinion: this is a really good one to start with if you've never owned one. It depends on what you want. CM is more on the software side. EM and Keyboard are on the hardware side. In between there are different choices:FM, MTM, Keys (I can only find it in Germany), SoundKeys, etc. MusicRun (french) is very poor.
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

Yup. Once a plugin has been added to the CM Studio "library", it's on the disc every month. I suppose at some point in time in the distant future, something will become obsolete (ie. once we've all made the move to 64-bit plugins), but until then it'll be there every month, whether it's "advertised" or not.SaviorNeeded wrote:MrM--The CD has everything including OMG

The stores are closed now, but I'll go there first thing tomorrow (after showering clothing and breakfast); I cannot go run thru the streets with no clothes on ; I'm too ugly for that
