:-o :-o :-o

Picked up a Hawkwind Live DVD earlier called 'Out Of The Shadows'.

Just put it on, not knowing quite which version of Hawkwind to expect (no line-up on the sleeve), and definately not expecting Arthur Brown to suddenly appear on my TV singing Aero Space Age Inferno!

Wow - what a surprise - I just about doubled up with laughing!
Not sure his dulcet tones are suited to it though...

Hawkwind!! Now we're talking...

Arthur is playing in Camden this Friday (3rd). Much as it pains me to point this out (since he's a really lovely guy - we camped right next to him at last year's Hawkfest) as we're also playing on Friday in London (Royal Standard)...bizarrely, we're a Hawkwind tribute band and have 2 ex-Hawkwind members joining us...going to be a tricky call if you're a space rock fan in London this week!

Which I'm not.
In London that is.

Been a long-time Arthur Brown fan, same with Hawkwind.
In fact, I've seen Hawkwind live more times than any other band. So many I've lost count.

Used to know Nik as it goes - stayed at his Welsh retreat a coupla times. :D

Everyone seems to know Nik! :-)

hehe - yeah, you're right.
I know him from my festival / travelling days as part of the 'convoy'. :D

DVD's finished now - an hour and twenty minutes! A tenner well spent. :D

Arthur Brown doing Sonic Attack and Silver Machine! :-o :D 8)

Is that the DVD where he gets the words on Silver Machine and Masters of the Universe wrong (the CD from the tour is funny where he does and starts doing a limerick in between songs)?

Post

OK you guys are going back now! I've never had the pleasure of seeing Hawkwind live but have some of their early albums. They were very different from anything I had heard up to that time. I'm pleased to hear they have a tribute band as they deserve a place in music history.

Not to hijack this thread but the first electronic music I ever listened to was a band called Silver Apples, A friend had the album by the same name. Did they ever do any other records? Possibly they have a tribute band somewhere?

(use your cocoons, it is what they are for)

I'll have to watch it again to see. Didn't notice though, but there is a little thing called The Song Of The Gremlins right after Masters that starts with a monologue type thing by Arthur... maybe that's it?

I'll check more closely later.
I didn't notice the words to Silver Machine get screwed up though, and I was paying attention to that tune. Great version. 8)

Arthur was a pretty cool *ahem* replacement / substitute for Nik. ( for thinking that...) He's got that madness about him...

:D

I think what they did with Arthur was cool - he came on for some numbers rather than doing all of them, which I don't think would have worked. And the ones he did were chosen sensibly: not sure if it's on the video, but his version of Steppenwolf live was fantastic...he came on in full 19th century coat and tails with the silver-topped walking cane and everything. And he's a very tall man, so it looked scary but *right* at the same time.

Maybe he got Silver Machine right that time - he did have a tendency to ramble a bit though (organised chaos - it worked well).

You'd have noticed the limerick:

There was a young man from Wales
Who lived on sh!t, snot and snails
When he couldn't get these
He lived on the cheese
That he scraped from his knob with his nails.

Lovely :-)

I have several concerts on VHS and one "The Chronicle of The Black Sword" on DVD.

Love In Space and my favorite Live Legends which has several live performances from "Space Bandits" and a very cool performance of "Back in the Box".
This concert comes complete with great music, fire-eaters, dancers and enough psychedelica to trip you naturally.

Hey dudes and dudettes my blacklight just burned out.....bummer man. 8)

kp - definately not the same DVD then.
I'd recognise all that lot I reckon.
Similar though, in that Arthur wasn't there for every track - they just wheeled him on and off every now and then.

Great presence though, and yeah, a good combination. 8)

I saw Hawkwind once - loudest band I ever saw! My ears were ringing for 3 days after the gig.. but then I was pressed up against the front of the stage.. 3 hours, with only a tiny break.. blimey!

One night at college, I was in the computer labs typing up an essay, and got talking to a lady about music. Hawkwind came up, and I jokingly said that Lemmy had left Hawkwind to form Motorhead because 'Hawkwind was too repetitive!'. Immediately she came back with 'That's not true..' Apparently she had been Lemmys girlfriend at the time they kicked him out!! Man did she tell some stories.. Sadly I had to finish my essay, and I never saw her again.. o well!

Saw them on the Black Sword tour (but then I've seen them on almost every tour since time immemorial  ). They were pretty good round about that time. They've had their off periods, but then they've been going now for something like 36 years? :-o Or thereabouts.

Yeah, you don't need hallucinogens to see or listen to Hawkwind - but they sure help. :D
