i believe several tracks of the same since he said polyphonic

just one soundsource - so several tracks of one sound source seams ok - i think the idea is a bit to have a minimal approach - than again one godawefully distorted wall of guitar would sound far from minimal

Teoretically yes, if you want to use a guitar (Slayer for exmaple) so you switch to another guitar setup, but if you use a synth you better move (automate) the sliders to go to another state (timbre)

Could be better if you avoid using a synth or something that makes several different timbres cause it will sound like it was composed with more than one instrument.

Yes you can make huge clusters if you want, but only with one sound source.

You can go minimalistic or as complex as you want.

let's clarify this:

When I'm doing a track with e.g. a bass-guitar then I Aam allowed to use as many bass-guitar tracks at the same time as I want and I can also use as many fx as I want as long as I'm using no other instrument (including voice, any percussion whatever) - right?

yes, quite obviously 'it can be' - but that doesn't mean that when Spyro says the one thing it automatically also means the other thing just as Remco suggested.

As I have been reacting specifically to this interpretation Remco offerend it is quite irrelevant if 'polyphonic' and 'multiple tracks' can mean the same thing in certain cases.

The idea behind this contest is to make more with less.

Minimal or not, try to squeeze the most of your instrument possibilities.

I think it would be cool to work with one instance only, but how can I tell if someone used 1 or 200 tracks? and some instruments have polyphony limit...

Try to avoid making a song that uses several instances of a synth like Z3ta+ using many different presets...that would be pointless and ppl will start arguing about your piece.

If you work with a live instrument, no prob, go ahead and record as many takes you want, you can even cut the samples as you wish.

It's a grand idea and it's a perfect litmus test for our temperaments. I can't wait to hear all the entries!

I predict, if people play fairly according to the spirit of the contest limitations, that this will be a month of keeper tracks across the board. Surely it will be interesting to see the essence of each person distilled in such a way.

Yeah, it would be great if we had all neato solo tracks. Maybe a few will be in key...
