Windows won't "see" Akai format on CD

Maybe you guys can help...I have no experience with Akai sample format. I want to use a library of Akai format in Sampletank 2 XL.
When I try and get the CD to display its contents, Windows(XP Pro)says that it is a format that it is not familiar with.
And if I try and look at the disc properties, it shows nothing on the disc at all (Sonic Reality World Traveler).
I just want to copy the data to my hard drive so I can import into Sampletank. Any ideas/advice? Thanks.

it's true that windows cannot 'see' AKAI cd-roms
you need a program that has the ability to read these discs - i'm not familiar with sampletank, but some programs i know that CAN read them and convert them to usuable files on your harddisk are -
CDXtract
Extreme Sample Converter
Propellerhead Software ReLoad
Native Instruments Kontakt
Steinberg HALion
now if SampleTank can read AKAI format, it won't matter if windows can't see the CD. Just put the CD in, and choose 'import from AKAI' (or it's equivalent) from your sampler's Import functions.
or perhaps if it isn't supported directly within sampletank, then maybe IK Multimedia has a standalone converter available?
if not i would recommend one of the above tools. I have Extreme Sample Converter, it's very attractively priced, works very well, and supports conversions back and forth between a variety of different sample formats.
good luck

Hey Muff...Thanks for the info. I did try and import from Sampletank, when the rom was in the drive, after I had selected "import", then "akai", but even Sampletank couldn't see anything on the drive. No folders, no data, nothing.
This made me wonder if this is an issue with Sampletank, or if I have a bad disc....Anyway, thanks for the info. I will try to convert the data to another format and see what happens. I appreciate your response.

Try having a look at the 'SampliTools' stuff on neXoft's site. They have some AKai disk-reading software (They're also the folk who wrote Loopazoid and Battery)

You have to hit the import button on the ST2 interface first and then insert the CD into the drive. It should be recognized by the ST2 import window but won't be recognized by regular explorer windows. So, you have to access the conversion of the data this way and then you can store it on your hard drive in ST2 format.snowman wrote:Maybe you guys can help...I have no experience with Akai sample format. Success! Thanks Squids, Whyte, Muff......She's goin' full steam converting now....That would be interesting, a steam-powered file format converter. Then again, I'm glad I don't have to do it that way.
Much appreciated.

No problem with VSampler-Akai here. XP Home, SP2. Don't know what to tell you.electro wrote:My Halion2 and Vsampler3 can't see any Akai CDs under WinXP SP2. Anyone running SP2 that has this sorted out?

Translator - www.chickensys.com - I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet.
Allows full conversions into SampleTank 1 and SampleTank 2 from all major formats, and it does it more accurately than either the native importer or other convertors. It also is the only convertor to convert into SampleTank 2, AFAIK.
Also included are many SampleTank-specific modification functions, since the editor in SampleTank is lacking. You can make SampleTank presets in SampleTank itself, then update your original SampleTank to take on those attributes.
You can preassign effects to go into your converted SampleTank files, and assign the Macro knobs as well.
You can completely view a SampleTank files structure and audition it within Translator as well.
There is a SampleTank only version available as well for less money.

Concerning Electros issue:
My understanding is that both VSampler and HALion use the Windows passthrough functions to access non-native formats, in contrast to other applications which use ASPI, the older method of accessing disks in a low-level fashion.
The passthrough functions can be just as problematic as ASPI - but ASPI has some self-diagnosis whereas the passthrough functions don't.
To answer your question, I would think that your CD/DVD drives aren't set up properly on your computer - something is not perfectly set up. I know that's a vague answer, but it's the only one I know of.
Why don't you ask VSampler or Steinberg support? It's their products - I'm sure they'd know.

Do you think it could have to do with the new Nvidia Nforce 3 250Gb chipset I am now using. Everything was fine on my old VIA KT133A system with the same DVD Drive! Now I can't even copy .wav files off commercial Audio CDs anymore. It lists those files as 44kb.

Doubt it's the chipset. It's likely the way the drives are setup within the OS.
