H9 Series: UltraTap-50%$49.00Buy

Well I downloaded the demo, and ended up purchasing.

No its not an extremely versatile delay, but for once I agree with ghettosynth. What this does, it does well and IMO its definitely a good value at $41.

Not only do I agree on that, but also with what it best compares to, which is GRM Delays, and as already mentioned that does not transition as cleanly as Ultra Tap.

I would still like to compare this to Delay Designer and I do have Logic, but I don't normally work in Logic so I didn't want to base my decision to buy or not buy off that.

I did compare this with Relayer, and I can say what I like about Ultra Tap is what happens with taps 33-64 that made me want to purchase this. Relayer is far more flexible for taps 1-32 (and sometime I forget just how lovely Relayer really is).

All I can is demo this... and if you already have lots of delays like most of us, then push the settings to get an idea of what this can do.

There's nothing I hate more than these youtube reviewers that apply subtle changes and then say how great it is, despite how what they're showing you is what every other delay plugin can do. Turn them knobs and push the damn thing.

Cannabis is kicking in. I'm out.

Agreed. Something to keep in mind with this as well is that I don't think presets do it justice. Now, normally I think that's a bit of a bullshit statement, especially when it comes to synths, a synth should come with presets that do it justice. However, in this case it's much like compressor or EQ presets. I think that this is fantastic for rhythmic manipulation and no preset can get the sound exactly right with your source material. You have to play with the knobs and sometimes within very tiny ranges to get the essence of this.

I tried finding the fantasticalness while doing this video experiment but couldn't really find it, it's ok but not fantastic (big IMHO).
Experimenting with Eventide's UltraTap in SYNC-mode using one of my Kaleidoscope presets/sequences as the audio input.

Yes, I can tell you just from that video that we have VERY different use cases. That input sounded way too busy for my tastes. However, if you were doing some deep techno or house and the delay were on either slow chords, or kick, or some clicks/minor hits, you would get a lot of subtle motion that is hard to get otherwise.

For me, it really is fantastic for rhythms, but I think that comes from using the ribbon to mapping small ranges of the tap time manipulation and larger ranges of some of the other controls with appropriate input that is going to be able to leverage interesting variation in many taps.

You can spend a lot of time trying to manually achieve the kind of subtle time modulation that you can get from this with simple controls. But, if the input is too busy, having a lot of taps loses its power IMHO. Try it on some whole note minor chords.

I'd prefer it if the ribbon supported MIDI other than mod-wheel. I can use a MIDI transformer but for performance work using a foot controller makes more sense and is more in keeping with the stomp-pedal design.

I made this request over on the Eventide forum - they said that could be done in an update.

I'm going to play around with an ACT controlller in SONAR - I should be able to map a MIDI CC# to the hotswitch...

(they said in their reply on th eEventide forum) The guy in the video was using Ableton to do this. He's obviously mapped *something* to the hot switch.

Excellent.

They probably mapped the MIDI CC to the ribbon's DAW automation within Ableton - Ultratap exposes the ribbon as automation as well as to MIDI CC#1. It's just a bit more convenient if the plugin can deal with it directly as it simplifies the routing a bit.

It's not a dealbreaker not having it. Realistically, you have to mess with the MIDI stream a bit if you've got a setup like mine where the foot controller is plugged into the master keyboard and are playing a VI on one channel as well as routing MIDI to something like UltraTap.

This works - but it's way too complicated ;-)
Also - I don't see how to only use this "template" for a Ultratap track - it wants to use it for everything.
Not worth it - I'll stick to using automation in SONAR ;-)
(except for the modwheel -> ribbon)

I have one of my foot pedals mapped to modwheel in my keyboard so I can do hands free MW - can't you do that?

It's simpler to do it in the DAW. I'd rather have the controller generate lots of different MIDI CCs and remap them. I like to be able to use the foot pedal for swells and mod-wheel for modulation on one-hand lines. I've got to separate out the MIDI streams anyway to route a CC to UltraTap while routing others to the instrument.

However, it's a Kurzweil, so I could simply store an additional setup preset to have one of the foot pedals go to CC#1.

Yep that's how I do it with my V-Synth

Did anyone who installed this find no factory presets present? That's what happened here. I don't recall any dialog during the install process that asked anything about where the presets are to go, and I probably would have let that default to where the installer wanted to place them anyway.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on how to resolve this.

First thing to do is see if they are there...

If you're using windows, they should be in your documents folder under Eventide.
They should be installed automagically, the installer doesn't give any options
to place them elsewhere IIRC.

Dunno about Mac...

Duh!!! Pilot error. Turns out in the install process you are asked what you want installed. I hastily unchecked everything except for VST 64-bit. Down at the bottom of the list is an entry for presets and manual. Like I said: duh!!!

Bought it last evening. Seems to be nice for interesting percussions and smears the sound lovely to an ambient background from a lead or an arp line.
