This is proper guitar solos.

I think the structure of Aqualung is fine - there has to be some sort of wig-out climax there. I'm just not sure Tull ever quite sorted out what should go there, and I think that's what plays into the problems doing it live. I think the solo can afford to go quite a long way off-piste and it seems (to me) weird that it doesn't.

At least It's not like Bob Fripp's solo on Scarymonsters where a delay pedal comes to the rescue after it initially stumbles in (on the album version - the 7in edit cut straight to the delay-heavy part). But the song would sound weird with something different in its place after all these years. It's a solo that needs to wind itself up to speed to work so was always going to be tricky to pull off.
also awesome....

Well, yes.

Yeah, I like how the solos support the song's melody there.

Best comment from song meanings:
Every time I hear this song it just makes me want to punch my mom in the face and sacrifice a cat!

Possibly, although, I would criticize every live version that I've heard for being just a bit too improvised and guilty of the worst kinds of rock cliches. I like the phrasing in the recorded version, as I said, although, I know nothing of how it was recorded. For all I know it could be comped from a bunch of different takes. I've learned the solo in days gone by and preferred to play it mostly note for note. When I saw them live they were just sloppy and, frankly, couldn't sing any more. I would have liked it a lot more if they had just moved on to flute+guitar prog rock instrumentals, because Ian can still rock the shit out of that flute.

At any rate, I mostly posted the video as one example of the kinds of solos that I like, regardless of what Brian May thinks. The solos just make certain songs for me and I've always just really liked the Aqualung solo. I don't feel the same way about all of their tracks mind you.

Like Kraftwerk Brian May built his own equipment

He built the Red Special guitar with his dad Harold.
