All I can say is that this looks VERY VERY interesting indeed. If VST/VSTi/ASIO are integrated into the software without going through obtrusive wrappers then this can be a winner. Also, I am hoping the scoring facilities are beefed up in this release. They've always been easy to use but way too limited for more serious scoring tasks.

It sounds like they added all the features I was missing most from Cubase. Track folders, freeze, clip mute, loop record. I'm impressed. This is more than I thought they'd be able to accomplish in this release.

The one thing I've come to absolutely rely upon in Live 4 is clip envelopes though. I won't go back to a host without them. I can't tell for sure from the announcement but it doesn't sound like Sonar 4 has these.

The continuing lack of native VST support is a little disappointing too.

it appears that one could upgrade from Sonar 3 Producer to Sonar 4 Studio if one wasn't interested in surround sound
the only thing lose would be
Sonitus fx Suite (which are in Sonar 3 PE) and I assume still usable if stored away from th einstall
and eq per track and dynamic bussing

for someone who's hand are full just trying to get a good stereo mix that might be an option.

Sonar has had Clip Envelopes. Unless I misunderstand what you mean? Plus, they've added clip-mute, etc.

Is this what you are refering to:

Loop construction enhancements: slice-based envelope control of gain, pitch, pan; slice preview; auto-loop

It looks like you will be able to slice existing loops and then put individual gain, pitch & pan envelopes on each slice

....and also

Enhanced comping and editing features: clip muting, partial-clip muting, auto-crop tool with cross-fade mode, audition selection, isolate, nudge

Now I've been wanting a nudge feature for the longest time, nice to have one now! :)

When I am no longer bound by an NDA I will post my thoughts.

By clip envelopes I mean Live-style automation envelopes that attach to the clip and move with it. Sonar 3 didn't have these. In fact, Sonar 3's automation was one of the things that led me to stop using it. Sounds like S4 has some interesting new stuff in that department.

One of the most amazing aspects for me is that Sonar 4 producer has probably the best collection of plugs in any sequencer on the PC at the moment.

1.Lexicon® Pantheon™ Surround Reverb :o
2.Lexicon® Pantheon™ Reverb
3.Sonitus Surround Compressor :-o
4.Sonitus fx Suite

a.31 audio effects
b.4 DXi soft synths
c.14 MFX!

Finally a package on the PC that can match Logic pro for FX,(my view) 8) I think Logic has Pow-r dithering as well.

I think all the native DSP - FX chorus, reverb , eq e.t.c have had a makeover as well, bottom right of the picture...

Chorus and Reverb

thats not the native chorus and reverb

I am just hoping that the freeze function works as well as it sounds and then I will be fairly happy. Of course I will probably have to go through edirol which is a pain but thats another story.

Also, don't know that much about this MPEX time streching - anyone care to share some light on its advantages.
