I came up with a tune somewhat in this vain many years ago and played it at a songwriter's support group. The organizer who had some modest success in the biz crumpled up the lyric sheet and threw it at me. He told me this sort of approach just too depressing. You need to inject some sort of humor or a sliver lining into your story. There are the corny crying in your beer old country songs but they are also pretty scarce and more often about someone else's problems or heart break.

Well there are lots of songs that are pretty miserable,that's often why they are popular,obviously 'Nothing Compares to You' is a very dark song,but it's a very effective one,I like doing dark brooding tracks as I like variety in my moods,I have written lots of lively jolly songs which compliment the lonely hearts type ballads,it provides useful contrast.
