Being a Chinese myself I don't like this film. I'd agree the art direction is very good, but the film is the worst of Zhang's movies I've ever seen.

I always thought Zhang made this movie primarily for the western market, now the responses to this thread further confirm this thought.

2 identifying factors for the one I'm thinking of:

1 - a great fight scene in which he's carrying around a small wooden bench with him. He'll fight with it from time to time, as well as sit on it during the fight.

2 - a scene in which he's climbing over a wall and he's caught by the local prefect. For some bizarre reason, part of trying to cover up his actions involves singing "Old MacDonald had a farm."...!?

3 - as he's escaping the prefect, the latter gets stuck in a quicksand bog and Jackie's character reluctantly saves him, but then gets away.

4 - it's definitely a comedy, but with kung-fu. I know most of his were, but this eliminates a FEW of the 'serious' action films.

Come on you wouldn't know a good movie if you saw it. That was a mini moog on the soundtrack. Wasn't that one of David Bowie's finest moments.

Excellent film (imo) nothing much to add, other than that whoever mentioned kurosawa, too right - this was a very japanese style chinese wuxia film, all those long shots etc. - the use of colour to signify the way people remember things etc.
Watched it on DVD again a couple of weeks ago & our lass & a friend of her's came in pissed up & started taking the mick, then the scene with the fight under the autumnal yellow trees came on - that was it they both shut there gobs & sat watching it with dreamy looks on their faces mumbling 'wow' & 'cool' etc.

I wonder if that is "The Young Master". I've seen the one you are talking about but I'm not sure of the title. Was there a scene where he fights with a dress (wearing a dress)?

My Chinese friend who I saw the movie with, said it was an excellent rendition of the story, as she and everyone else she knew had memorized it; that the language was perfect, and that the locations were mostly within a certain national park that was near the university town where she lived.
