I am totally new to DAWs, although I have been working drummer for maybe 20 years. On the drum kit I mostly played rock /indie/avant and bit of jazz /experimental but in electronic music I have always been interested in ambient, minimalism, and blip hop, especially glitch and stutter sampling/slicing/destruction.(Autechre and Oval)
I decided to treat myself to a UR22mk2 interface which came with Cubase Ai - just Simply as a
an interface to record audio on my laptop, ( it's got more memory space than my iPad! )
I use iOS apps as instruments. I mostly use Samplr, Sector and loopy HD but I am also a big fan of Droneo as a chord and tone generator and noisemaker The main reason for my purchase was for multi tracking with side-chain for gating effects for stuttering and peppering holes into drones. Sadly I learned after I bought it thatside-chain is not an option unless I pay $200 for an upgrade to pro
So, to cheer myself up I became interested in VST plug-ins effects hoping that I can create interesting textures with tremolo effects and granular synths .
Although I spent a lot of time in recording studios, I regret not watching more closely at what the engineer was doing on Cubase! I'm lost!
Which is very funny-
I actually wrote some tunes on come base on an Atari in 1997 ! I can't remember what I did, anyway it's very different interface now !
I have no idea how to get control of Cubase 9 AI yet - despite reading manuals and watching videos . I am enjoying my (obsessive and frustrating) steep learning curve and making lots of mistakes, but I already started thinking about paying for maybe one or two hours tuition just to help me sort out my workflow and file storage. I'm already installing VSTs that are getting blacklisted and I'm not sure why .

I've clearly got lots to learn and I'm looking forward to it I'm really grateful that this forum is here so I can read through it and learn. Hello people :)

I'm off for a cup of coffee and watch the steinberg for beginners videos again

My advice is skip Cubase and get into Bitwig or Live, they have workflow that might suit you better for the kind of things you wanna do.

Hi Zexila
Thanks a lot
I had a look. It seems like a much faster flow, yes.
Trouble is, budget, and although I'd like bitwg studio, I'm unable to buy it.
The free trial is amazing though :) many thanks for your help.
Have a good night

There are lite versions of Live, and an 8 track Bitwig ... they come up in the KVR marketplace regularly for a few dollars ($10 -20).

Yeah, that's my main issue with Bitwig, price and update model.

Look for second hand licences here

Hi; control centre: Thank you. I've just had a look at the marketplace. I'll keep my eyes open for future deals. I'm on a huge learning curve right now. Fun! but my eyes hurt! I'm just trying to install, a 64 bit VST version of HYSTERESIS to get glitches going in Cubase. keeps downloading the 32 bit version by default somehow.now backlisted. :( I've emailed glitch machines for help.
Thanks for your help. Have a great day :) :tu:

Except Youtube that's free, there is Sonic Academy. They have some serious tutorials for different DAWs, including Cubase, Ableton Live, FL Studio, etc. Those tutorials are normally made by Pro producers who know their stuff. Well spent money IMHO.
Win 10 -64bit, CPU i7-7700K, 32Gb, Focusrite 2i2, FL-studio 20, Studio One 4, Reason 10

I think you´d always need to experiment in order to find out how you do this and that, nomatter which DAW you´re gonna work with as a first time user. It´s really just trial and error, and you shouldn´t even need to google anything or read the manual when it comes to basic stuff, though it can be helpful sometimes. I´m talking about Cubase here, the only DAW I ever used after the amiga days. It´s a natural process you´re going through, and in a few months, it´ll be in your DNA how you use Cubase to do 99 % of the things you´re after.
Best Regards

Hi Roman Empire,
Thanks for the wisdom. You're right. It took a while to learn the drums. Learning this is the same. practice, trial and error. Discoveries.
I'll remember to be free, mess about and relax -just .. play!

Happy times.
Regards.
