Hello. I have the opportunity to purchase a Yamaha DJX (1) in good condition for ~80-100 dollars this week. Should I? Would you? O.K., here's the situation:

1. I am broke and will be for some time
2. I used to play piano, years ago, and need to practice again, making the on-board sounds useful to practice wherever.
2b. 61 keys
3. I use Fl Studio, and would really use the knobs and touch strip
4. it has velocity sensitive keys
5. all the other patterning sequencer crap is largely irrelevant to me, and I would by a big ole 88 key controler if I had the skill and money.

What thinks you? To buy or not to buy?

man when I was in retail I hated that thing, but only because everyone had to try it "DJ..D D DJ" but for that price it would suit your needs. I'm not completely sure that the controllers send out cc messages via midi, it should. But perhaps a trip to Yamaha's page and downloading the manual might be wise. The midi implementation chart will tell you what it sends and recieves :)

after 30min searching, I find no CC chart, and there is no manual included. Perhaps this is a sign...

Must be someone here with one, if not I know there is on the FL forum...post the question there (if yoy don't get an answer right away I'll bump it up until we do get an answer. At worst you just wont be able to assign the controllers but I think you can...damn Yamaha, Roland is the same way

Thanks for the links. I couldn't get the official users group to load when I stumbled on it earlier, but it works now. Any other opinions?

The DJX is a piece of crap. Save a 2-300 more dollars, buy a good second-hand synth (Yamaha CS6x, and there are plenty others with good sounds) you will be much happier, trust me, i used to have one and I was in your exact position.

any other thoughts. BTW, there is definitely no manual available (Even on the web that I can find) so I'm leaning no.

Yeah, go for it. It's a cheap midi controller with 61 keys. That's all you need to play vsti's. Who cares about it's onboard sounds. Should have a decent enough piano sound to at least practice on if you don't wanna fire up the computer.

I've got several cool synths, but use a cheap Casio 73 key as a controller. Works great!

Doesn't have all the frills, or great key feel or anything, but it works. I've used 61 keys, in the past and it's tolerable.

All that being said, I will probably upgrade to something like the new M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 key http://midiman.com/products/en_us/Keyst ... -main.html in the future.
