Hi - new to DAWs. How to learn cubase slow and steady?

Thanks for the wisdom. You're right. It took a while to learn the drums. Learning this is the same. practice, trial and error. Discoveries.

Well, I should add that Cubase in the 90s was easier to get an overview of, so less to learn. Then again, the basics were the same, and there´s just so much there that you can ignore untill you know that there´s something you need. The basics would be to connect a midi keyboard, install vst´s, and start recording midi data plus quantize. This is almost the same procedure for any DAW but it´s easy to get overwhelmed by all the other fantastic things you can do.
I´m sure you´ll get there, so don´t stop

that halion sonic though ... what the hell ? I cant get a decent sound out of it!!

The good sounds are included with Cubase Artist and Pro. Pro has the most presets, including some sounds from the newer Yahama Motifs.

I would recommend downloading Halion Sonic SE 3 from Steinberg. The preset browser is much better.

Just wanted to say thanks again. Its going well. I'm slowing down, taking my time, enjoying the ride, and staying calm. As I mess around, no settings seem to stay the same after a shut down. So i'm getting a feel for why things go silent! I'm getting better at fixing probs (mostly, they are problems that I inadvertently make while screwing around!)

I bought a 25 key MIDI keyboard to speed up composing flow. Was a great thing to do. I've stopped drawing notes and can now focus on sounds and music, rather than GUI and keystroke/shortcuts.
only problem now is, LATENCY and MIDI 'configuring / routing' - ghaaaaa!!
onward ...
