In Fl Studio, you just need to place ribs on a track as an effect, then route
an audio source and a midi source to it.

-For instance, you could route the kick drum from the basic template to some track.

-Load up a step sequencer (or other midi source), and set its midi "output"
to port 2 on the plugin's settings page.

-Put ribs in the effect rack of some track, then set its midi "input" to port 2.

*The midi port doesn't matter, so long as the "output" for the sequencer and the
"input" for ribs match up.

-Set up a midi pattern to play the kick, then route the audio from the kick
track, to the track with ribs on it. Program a pattern for the step sequencer,
and press play. Thats it...

The audio from the kick and the midi from the step sequencer will drive
the ribs plugin.

Its actually really simple, even if my instructions here seem confusing.
*This isn't the only way to do it btw, just a quick example...

-Cheers

This thing is amazing. So much potential to streamline my automation workflow. I will definitely add a +1 for mac VST or AU!!!

I have updated the gist https://gist.github.com/rcrath/b1d2b8db ... 7ab3273e6c. It will work to get you pretty well into understanding ribs I think. Deep app! I am learning a lot from writing this up. Much of it is just writing down and organizing the info from the tooltips and the video cuz I prefer to rtfm.

@1eqinfinity, there are a number of things I was not sure about and I made a few suggestions here and there. You can find them by looking for stuff in bold and parentheses, or search the raw markdown for "__".

When it is done, maybe you can move it to the ribs wiki? I wrote it in github markdown with that in mind.

Also, I intend on finishing it as time permits. I have much more pressing things to do so I'll probably do this first :)

Thank you, nice tutorial :)

@rcrath thank you for your input! After talking to quite a lot of people these days I found out that rtfm approach is very popular among sound designers. I think I realy should make a readable manual in the following weeks. I will use all the voiced confusion about Ribs that I find to make a clear manual :)

I made it through writing up the the video and the control set and have somewhat of an understanding of most of the controls. I'll pull out some questions from the gist page, but it is basically done. feel free to use any of it in the manual if you wish. This was a good way to wrap my head around Ribs. in case you don't like to rewind the discussion, here is the wiki page. https://gist.github.com/rcrath/b1d2b8db ... 7ab3273e6c

Any news regarding OSX version?

Post

@rcrath Thanks!

@parma Soon, sooooon :ud: Honestly. I might have to rewrite some graphics code for Mac, but everything prior to that seems to be figured out. Anyway, after Synthposium I'm pressed to release AU even harder. ~Every 3rd person asked if there's going to be one, and they wanted to know the dates.

Good news. What about VST for Mac?

That would be great, thank you ...

Mac VST shouldn't be a big problem.

Im going crazy trying to make this work in FL Studio, And being english my second language doesnt make it better.

So I open an instrument in the channel rack, I ve tried with Omnisphere, Serum, samples or the default kick or snare, which are samples too. In the midi options of one of these instruments, I set 'Output port' number 2 (for example) And I target the mixer track into numer 2 too

Then in the mixer I open ribs (as an effect of the insturment) in the same track that I put the instrument, and set 'Input port' number 2, then I play notes via MIDI, I record in the piano roll and then play it, but I get no sound from it. What I am doing wrong?

Im sorry I know this has been explained before here in this topic but after reading it all I cant still make it work, and Im not that good at english when it comes to sound producing argot.

Thank you!

@C_Moltisanti, your English is very good. If I have followed you correctly, this should help;

Insert a MIDI Out channel and set it to Port 2.
Set your VSTi MIDI Input port to 2 and also set the MIDI Output port to 2.

With Ribs open, play via the MIDI Out channel and hopefully you will hear and see the results. If not twiddle about with Ribs and be prepared to hear some pretty harsh sounding results.

After that you just have to learn how to control the monster.
