I replaced a Fostex with a Cutec, which seemed to have better specs at the time although I don't remember what. It did record at a faster speed. Not rack mounted or black, however.

my first 4-track was a cutec, not much to it was there Gary but as I recall the heads were highly thought of.

Clarion made a rack mount, I also had one of these

Other options are AMR/Peavey and Audio-Technica (though their offering was more a mixer that you could stick rack ears on with a four-track cassette in it).
