Something like AKAI VIP but without the keyboard would seem to be the new AKAI VIP 3! (although to be honest you may as well by an MPK mini and get a free keyboard with the software!)

Nope, as i wrote before you dont need keyboard (or that means any hardware). Im succesfuly using it and i have mapped some of controls to Novation Launch Control. I use KK mainly when im in search for sound by specific category, its very handy for Komplete stuff.jasco wrote:But don't you need the hardware to activate the software?Elektronisch wrote:It is not tiedkrabbencutter wrote:OP asked for a software that is not tied to specific hardwareElektronisch wrote:Native Instruments Komplete Kontrolyou can download it and use it as it is with any controler

Download and try yourself if you dont believe me. In preferences you can set vst folder and add plugins of your choice.

I own plenty, but not Komplete - which I'm guessing is what you need?Elektronisch wrote:

I use VIP standalone with MPD218 - just to quickly check and tag some presets
It's a regular VST host with MIDI input, operated with mouse.
The only advantage the keyboard adds is, obviously, to browse presets from it.

Also possible, Im not sure, because i didnt need to enter the serial as far as i remember and i dont have a serial for komplete kontrol, nor it is in my product list at NI account. But i have been using Komplete Kontrol for over a year with Standart k10 edition and later on updated ones. Are you absolutly 100 percent sure it requires a serial number for komplete kontrol?jasco wrote:I own plenty, but not Komplete - which I'm guessing is what you need?Elektronisch wrote:

Have you checked your email for serial? you know some companies even for free products generate serial number.

According to "KOMPLETE KONTROL Setup Guide English":
So it's Komplete that is the pre-req I believe, true though - it's not tied to hardware!Serial Numbers
KOMPLETE KONTROL S-SERIES comes with a hardware serial number that can be found on
the name plate on the bottom of the hardware unit. The KOMPLETE KONTROL software is part
of the KOMPLETE 10, KOMPLETE 10 ULTIMATE, KOMPLETE 9, and KOMPLETE 9 ULTIMATE
software bundles and is activated thus:
Users of KOMPLETE 10 and KOMPLETE 10 ULTIMATE do not need any other serial
number for the KOMPLETE KONTROL software. Though it must be downloaded separately,
KOMPLETE KONTROL is activated as part of the KOMPLETE software bundle.
Users of KOMPLETE 9 and KOMPLETE 9 ULTIMATE must download and activate the
